“No, his phone’s been off. I’m worried. I just want to know if he’s okay, if he’s busy,” Scarlett said quickly.
The desk officer tapped at her keyboard without looking up. “Officer Colt? Criminal investigations unit? He’s not on shift. Probably out on a case.”
“When will he be back? Or could you check with his colleagues for me?” Scarlett pressed.
“We don’t disclose officers‘ whereabouts,” the woman cut her off coolly. “Look, miss, they’re busy. They don’t have time to babysit their phones. Go home and wait.”
Scarlett bit her lip, stung, but before she could reply, a heavyset man with a beer belly walked past and stopped. His nameplate read Thomas.
“What’s the noise here?” he barked, eyeing her.
Scarlett hurried to explain. “Officer Thomas, sir, I’m looking for Colt. He’s been out of contact for three days, I—”
“Colt?” Thomas snorted, his jowls shaking. “You’re here for him? He hasn’t got time to see you
now.”
Her stomach dropped. “What happened? Is he in trouble?”
Thomas folded his arms, running his eyes over her with a sneer. “Trouble? Just bungled a case and now he’s neck–deep in it. You girls shouldn’t be hanging around police stations. You’re in the way.”
“A case? What case? He didn’t say anything about-”
“Not your business!” Thomas snapped, voice sharp.
But Scarlett had caught it: the flash of smugness in his eyes at Colt’s name. He was enjoying this.
She forced herself to stay calm. “Officer Thomas, I only need to know he’s safe. Even if I can just see him for a moment…”
“See him? You think this is your living room?” Thomas cut her off, louder this time. “If you’re his girlfriend, take my advice and move on.”
He stepped closer, spit flying, then stopped short, studying her again. His expression shifted, anger giving way to a sly half–smile. He leaned in, dropping his voice.

“I’ll tell you this much: Colt’s a problem. Anyone tied to him gets dragged down. The case he took
– even headquarters can’t handle it. And he just had to play the hero. Now he’s stuck, dragging the rest of us with him.”
Scarlett’s blood froze. Colt was stubborn, yes, but reckless? Never. He was good best. How could things have gotten this far?
Still, if Thomas thought she was Colt’s girlfriend, maybe she could push the act.
“Impossible. Mingxuan is brilliant. He wouldn’t fail like that.”

Thomas sneered. “Brilliant? He’s a fool. Couldn’t leave the mess alone, and now we’re all paying for it.”
“I have to see him!” Scarlett’s eyes flared with determination. “No matter what’s happening, I must see him.”
“See him? Who do you think you are?” Thomas laughed, harsh and mocking. “I told you, no! Get out before you make me lose my patience.”
He shoved a hand toward her. Scarlett stumbled back, almost falling-
“Touch her, and you’ll regret it.”
The voice was cold, steady, carrying a quiet authority that cut sharper than any shout.
Scarlett turned.
Two men stood in the doorway.
On the left, Jack in a casual suit, his handsome face creased with worry. Relief washed over him when he saw her unharmed. He strode forward and caught her arm. “You okay?”
On the right stood Jasper. Tall, broad–shouldered, sleeves rolled to the elbow on a fitted black shirt, the lines of his forearm stark in the fluorescent light.
His jaw was set, his dark eyes like a still lake in winter- calm, but so deep and cold that Thomas felt his chest seize.
No raised voice, no threat. Just that look
bluster hollow.

Thomas swallowed, his confidence shrinking. “I’m just following regulations! Colt is on duty. No visitors.”
