Finally , she called his secretary , Jacob .
Once the call connected , she asked , “ I can’t get through to Trevor’s phone . Is he still busy ? ”
Jacob sounded a bit surprised . “ Boss flew overseas this afternoon for a business trip . You didn’t know ? ”
Wynn froze . She really didn’t know . Trevor hadn’t told her .
“ Was the business trip a last – minute decision ? ”
“ Yes , it was . ”
Even if it had been a last – minute decision , he surely could have found time to call or send her a message . But he didn’t say anything at all .

After a moment’s silence , she picked up her bag and left the home office while dialing Jordyn’s number .
Jordyn was lying in the living room playing with a puzzle . Seeing the call , she quickly answered . “ Wynn ? ”

“ Yeah , I’m home . ”
Wynn smiled and asked , “ Were you happy having your dad go to your parent – teacher meeting today ? ”
Hearing this , Jordyn responded cheerfully , ‘ ‘ Wynn , you got it wrong ! The one who came to school today for the meeting was Mom , not Dad ! ” 2
At the mention of Celeste , Wynn’s smile and tone both calmed slightly . “ Is that so … ”

Hearing the question , she paused to think . “ Not really … Dad kept trying to talk to Mom during lunch , but Mom didn’t seem very interested . She didn’t really want to talk to him and didn’t seem very happy eating together either . ”
