Chapter 219
He genuinely wanted to patch things up with Charlie. Why did Evelyn have to be so dramatic? He should have been furious, but seeing her pale face resting against him, he just couldn’t be indifferent.
He had planned to hand Evelyn over to Dr. Nelson, but his instincts kicked in faster, and he scooped her up in his arms instead.
“Charles…” Dahlia’s voice was weak as she called out to him, trying to mask the jealousy simmering inside. Her injuries were far more visible than Evelyn’s. Surely, Charles wouldn’t leave her behind.
Charles glanced at Dahlia, but instead of passing Evelyn to Dr. Nelson as she had hoped, he said, “Take good care of Dahlia.” Dr. Nelson had been with the Jenkins family for ages, and Charles trusted him completely.
“Yes, Mr. Charles!” Dr. Nelson replied promptly.
With that, Charles walked away, leaving Dahlia in disbelief. It hit her then-Charles had really left her there, despite her injuries, to carry Evelyn away.
“Charles…” Dahlia stood up, ready to follow him. She wasn’t worried about Evelyn telling him anything- Charles wouldn’t buy it. But the thought of him alone with Evelyn was unbearable. Charles hadn’t shown Dahlia any affection so far. She feared Evelyn might draw him back in, knowing how much he’d always been attracted to Evelyn’s allure…
Before she could run after them, Dr. Nelson stepped in her way. “Ms. Dahlia, Mr. Charles asked me to look after you. Your wounds need dressing,” he said gently, though his tone was somewhat detached.
Dahlia was frustrated at being stopped. She almost lost her cool but quickly restrained herself. She hadn’t secured her place yet. No matter how much she disliked or distrusted Charles’ associates, she couldn’t afford to show it. This was a pivotal moment; she couldn’t let them have any reason to badmouth her to Charles. Even if he didn’t believe them, it might still taint her image in his eyes.
“Thank you, Dr. Nelson,” she said, forcing a strained smile. She could hear the engine outside-Charles had already driven off. Chasing him would be pointless. So, she settled back onto the sofa with a sigh.

Once they left Greenrose, Charles took Evelyn straight to the hospital. After thorough checks confirmed she only had injuries on her hand, he finally felt a sense of relief. Then, he brought Evelyn back home.
He carried her to the bathroom.

In the past, Charles wouldn’t have
considered Evelyn’s feelings-if he wanted her, he rarely stopped to think about what she wanted. But now… something was changing. He wasn’t quite sure what it was but he didn’t dwell on it.
He stepped out of the bathroom, picked up his phone, and called Dr. Nelson to check on Dahlia’s condition. Once assured she was fine, he hung up and put the phone aside. He climbed into bed, drawing Evelyn close.
Watching her sleep peacefully against him, Charles felt a wave of calm wash over him. He dimmed the lights, remembering she was afraid of the dark, and closed his eyes, letting the tranquility settle in.
