Upon hearing Charles’s words, Dahlia’s eyes instantly brimmed with tears.
“Charles, I know I’ve wronged Charlie, but I’m already a mess. You have no idea what I’ve been through these past two years, and Evelyn just won’t let it go.”
“I get that she can’t get over Charlie’s death. It’s not like I don’t understand.”
“I was genuinely relieved to hear she was alive. I sought her out today to apologize again. It’s been two years, and I hoped she could move on and start fresh. But I never imagined…”
“You can’t even begin to understand how she tormented me in that room! She nearly killed me!”
“If you hadn’t shown up when you did, I might not be here right now.”
“And yet, did you see any remorse in Evelyn? Her arrogance was off the charts. If
I let this slide, who knows what she’ll do to me next time?”
“Can you honestly stand by and watch me get hurt by Evelyn over and over?”
Dahlia cried like a fragile flower caught in the rain. She said this, convinced that Charles would take her side and comfort her. Between her and Evelyn, she was certain Charles would unhesitatingly choose to protect her.

Charles’s voice was cold and steady. “Dahlia, I told you two years ago to keep your distance from Evelyn, to stay out of her way.”
That one sentence drained the color from Dahlia’s face. She looked at Charles, hurt and aggrieved. “Are you saying I deserved what Evelyn did to me?”
“As long as you don’t go looking for trouble.”
Charles spoke calmly after reviewing the injury report and feeling reassured.
“So, you’re saying I should duck and dodge every time I see her?”
Dahlia couldn’t hold back, her emotions spiraling out of control. She hadn’t expected that after being beaten like this by Evelyn, Charles would not only lack sympathy, But also lay the blame on her and defend Evelyn.
“Bodyguards aren’t just for decoration. If you don’t send them away, Evelyn wouldn’t have had the chance to hurt you.”
Charles’s words left Dahlia speechless. Today, she really had played into her own downfall. But hearing those words from Charles stung, and her tone turned icy.
“Evelyn hurt me, and I won’t just let it slide. I’m not dropping the charges.”
She’d already reported it to the police. Charles’s verbal support for Evelyn wouldn’t change the fact that she intended to see Evelyn face justice.
“What do you mean by not letting it slide?”
Charles handed Dahlia the injury report. Instinctively, Dahlia took it. To her
disbelief, the assessment didn’t even qualify as minor injuries, let alone serious ones.
“How is this even possible?”
Dahlia was in disbelief.
“Dahlia, let’s not do this. Let me take you home to rest. I’ll handle the police report.”
Charles softened his tone. But to Dahlia, being told not to make a fuss was like rubbing salt in the wound, She’d been slapped and kicked by Evelyn, and yet he said she was overreacting. But the injury report left her with no grounds to accuse Evelyn.
No matter how upset she felt, she had to swallow her pride and endure it. Swallowing her pride, she forced out a single word, “Okay.”
In the car, sitting in the passenger seat, Dahlia listened to Charles call the police station. She knew that once the call ended, the incident of her being beaten by Evelyn would be brushed under the rug.
She had been beaten for nothing!
After dropping Dahlia off at home, Charles drove away.
