Chapter 433
Reflecting on the chaos of the previous night, Dahlia was seething with anger, wishing she could make Evelyn disappear. How dare Evelyn get her thrown into the police station! And Evelyn just took it all in stride! Dahlia wasn’t about to let her plans unravel, so she kept pushing Evelyn’s buttons.
“Evelyn, you ought to be thanking me. I was doing a good deed! Your little one was only five when she passed, just a tiny kid, all alone and miserable down there!” she taunted. “But you, as her mom, were too scared to join her. So it’s up to me, her aunt, to show her some love and send her grandma down to keep her company!”
“Who’d have thought that old lady was such a tough cookie? She survived the fall and even hung on without oxygen!”
Dahlia’s words were like daggers, each one giving her a twisted sense of
satisfaction as she watched Evelyn teeter on the brink of collapse, unable to fight back.
“You and your worthless mom don’t deserve to be alive. You might as well join your kid in the afterlife!” she sneered.
Just then, Brooks rolled up in his car and spotted the showdown from afar. He couldn’t hear Dahlia, but her smug expression said it all-she was trying to provoke Evelyn.
Evelyn hadn’t retaliated, clearly holding back for some reason. But Brooks quickly pieced it together. Through the car window, their eyes locked, and an unspoken understanding passed between them. Brooks mouthed, “Go for it, I’ve got the surveillance covered.”
Evelyn got the message. Their teamwork was flawless. Brooks hit the gas, positioning the car to block the camera’s view, creating a blind spot.
With the signal given, Evelyn sprang into motion. She lunged at Dahlia, grabbing her hair and delivering a flurry of slaps, each fueled by the rage she harbored. The more she despised Dahlia, the harder she struck. In that moment, she poured every ounce of her strength into making sure Dahlia wouldn’t have it easy.
Dahlia was caught off guard, the attack happening too quickly for her to react. Only when the stinging pain hit did she come to, blood filling her mouth as she screamed, “Evelyn, you witch!”
She tried to fight back, but strong hands intervened, pinning her arms behind her leaving her powerless while Evelyn vented her anger. Dahlia’s cheeks were a mess of red welts, blood trickling from her mouth. The pain was so intense, she was nearly numb, unsure how many times she’d been slapped until Evelyn finally stopped, exhausted, her arms too heavy to lift anymore.
When Evelyn finally paused, she added a swift kick for good measure. Dahlia’s wheelchair jerked forward uncontrollably. The pain left her hands shaking, unable to hit the button to control the chair.
“Ah!” she screamed in terror as she and the wheelchair tumbled down the steps. She landed face-first in a roadside puddle, her wheelchair crashing onto her hands. With a grunt, filthy water filled her mouth.
Charles wrapped up the paperwork and couldn’t find Dahlia inside. The police mentioned she had already left. Immediately, he hurried outside. Just as he reached the station’s exit, he saw Dahlia and her wheelchair overturned on the ground.
Charles’s expression shifted to pure shock, and he dashed over, shouting, “Dahlia!”
Quickly, he was at her side, lifting her from the puddle. Seeing Dahlia battered and bruised, his face darkened.
“Charles, it was Evelyn…” Dahlia managed to say.
