Evelyn never imagined that the person who would be a match for the kidney donation was none other than her best friend, Adam. Just like Evelyn, Adam harbored a deep-seated anger towards Charlie, who had caused so much heartache in their lives.
“Sandy is quite lucky,” remarked someone, “because Adam, after losing his friend’s daughter to kidney failure, registered as a donor, and it turns out he’s a match for Sandy.”
Sandy was a sweet kid, well-liked by her doctor, who was relieved to see her find a donor so quickly. Dahlia was pleased too, but her reasons were twisted. The irony that Adam, Evelyn’s best friend, would unknowingly save Dahlia’s enemy’s daughter was delicious to her.
The thought of revealing this truth to Evelyn after the surgery, reveling in the pain it would cause, gave Dahlia a bitter satisfaction. It was like a small victory against the humiliations she had suffered from Evelyn.

Meanwhile, Evelyn and Brooks left the police station and headed back to the hospital. Adam was fuming when he heard that Dahlia had slipped through the cracks again, but he took a moment to comfort Evelyn.
Brooks stepped out to take a work call, leaving Evelyn and Adam alone in the room. When Adam went to the restroom, his phone started ringing.
“Adam, your phone,” Evelyn called out.
“Could you answer it for me?” Adam replied from inside. He had no secrets from Evelyn.
Evelyn picked up the phone and saw
a familiar number flash on the

from the Capital. She had dialed that number countless times during Charlie’s illness.
Why would they be calling Adam?
With a mix of curiosity and dread, Evelyn answered, “Hello, Adam. This is the Capital Donor Center. You registered with us to donate an organ and we have a patient who’s a match for your kidney. Are you willing to proceed?”
Tears welled up in Evelyn’s eyes as she listened. She instantly understood Adam’s motive for registering at the donor center. Charlie had died from kidney failure. After her daughter’s death, Evelyn had also signed up as a donor, hoping to spare another family from the same heartache.
But she had no idea Adam had quietly done the same.
Caught off guard, Evelyn struggled to speak through her tears. Adam, who had just walked out of the restroom, noticed her tear-streaked face and rushed over, concerned. “What’s wrong?”
Hearing the conversation on the phone, Adam took it from her. Once he learned what was happening, he didn’t hesitate. “Yes, I’ll be there to sign the papers tomorrow!”
He hung up and turned to Evelyn with a reassuring smile. “The surgery is next month, right after my championship. Don’t worry, it won’t keep your buddy from bringing home the gold!”
“Evelyn, I know you’re worried,” Adam continued. “But I knew exactly what I was signing up for when I registered.”
