Charles secretly hoped that Evelyn wouldn’t let her issues with the adults spill

Charles’s words darkened Adam and Evelyn’s faces instantly. Frustrated, Adam hurled his pen across the room. He felt a wave of disgust wash over him. He had nearly donated a kidney to the daughter of the woman who almost wrecked Charlie’s life. If Dahlia was the villain and her daughter Sandy was truly innocent, he might have considered it. But Sandy, even as a child, had plotted against Charlie, causing him grief time and again. This kid was trouble through and through.
Adam wasn’t selfless enough to give up a part of himself for someone who didn’t deserve it. “Donate to Sandy? Not a chance!” Adam declared firmly, grabbing the agreement and tearing it to shreds. “Evelyn, let’s go.”
Adam took Evelyn’s hand and headed for the door. “Eve.” Charles reached out, trying to stop Evelyn. But Evelyn shook off his hand with disdain. She didn’t need to say a word—her expression said it all. Sandy’s fate didn’t matter to her.
Seeing Evelyn’s determined look, Charles didn’t push further. Her hatred for Dahlia and Sandy ran even deeper than he’d thought. Letting go, he watched them leave. Adam and Evelyn informed the staff of their decision not to donate. The staff didn’t push back-it was, after all, their choice. In situations like this, a donor could change their mind at any time.
Outside, Adam was hit with a wave of relief. Despite his dislike for Charles, he was grateful that Charles had stepped in, letting him learn the truth before it was too late. If the surgery had gone ahead, Dahlia would have used it against Evelyn, making him an unsuspecting accomplice in Evelyn’s pain. For once, Charles had done the right thing.
At the hospital, as soon as Adam backed out, Dahlia got the news. Her face fell when she heard. Panic gripped her. She had promised Wesley she’d keep Sandy safe. Sandy wasn’t just her leverage with Charles; she was also Dahlia’s lifeline. If anything happened to Sandy, Dahlia would lose everything.
“We had an agreement! Why the sudden change of heart?” Dahlia demanded. “Ms. Dahlia, this isn’t uncommon. Please stay calm. With Mr. Jenkins on the case, he’ll find a suitable kidney for Sandy. She’ll be alright,” the doctor tried to reassure her, thinking her distress was about her daughter’s health.
Dahlia didn’t reply, but the mention of Charles snapped her back. Remembering Charles’s look when he found out Adam was the donor, she thought she had convinced him. Charles loved Sandy so much, she couldn’t imagine he’d risk Sandy’s life for Evelyn’s sake. But she was wrong…
Caught between jealousy and fear, Dahlia dialed Charles’s number. He picked up quickly. Though she had her doubts, she didn’t confront him outright. Instead, she started crying and pleading, “Charles, Sandy’s doctor just told me that Adam backed out of the donation. How could this happen? What will happen
