“Before I get back, make sure Sandy’s stable.”
Charles glanced at the doctor nearby, his gaze so intense that the doctor nodded immediately, “Yes, Mr. Jenkins!”
Nobody dared to ask when he’d be returning.
“Charles…”
Dahlia was already in tears, struggling to speak. Her face was streaked with tears as she looked at Charles, hope shining through her eyes, seeing him as her last hope.
“Wait for me to come back. I won’t let anything happen to Sandy.”
Charles’s voice was deep and resolute. With those words, he didn’t linger and walked out briskly. While walking, he quickly found Andrew’s number and called him.

Evelyn returned to Adam’s hospital room. As soon as she walked in, Adam looked at her with concern, “Are you alright?”
“I’m fine,” Evelyn replied, shaking her head gently. Looking at Adam’s hand, guilt tugged at her heart. She knew going to Charles was pointless; she had no leverage over him. She was just too angry and too worried about Adam.
“Adam, I’m sorry.”
“Sorry for what? Evelyn, stop taking the blame for everything!”
“The ones who should be apologizing are the people who put me in this state and those who orchestrated it. It’s got nothing to do with you. Stop stressing over things you can’t control, alright?”
Adam gave her a playful flick on the forehead. They had been through thick and thin together. Without any family of his own, Evelyn was his best friend and his family. Out of love for her, he would do anything for Charlie. They weren’t at fault; the real culprits were those who’d stop at nothing to achieve their ends.
Evelyn mumbled a soft “okay.” Adam saw the pain in her eyes, and it hurt him too.
Right then, Evelyn’s phone rang. It was Andrew. The moment she saw his name, both she and Adam tensed up.
Evelyn answered quickly, “Dr. Nelson.”
“Ms. Evelyn, do you have a moment to come to the hospital? I’d like to discuss your mother’s condition.”
Andrew’s voice was low, making Evelyn’s heart race. “What happened to my mom?”
She asked hastily, her voice trembling slightly.
“Come to the hospital, and we’ll talk it over.”
Andrew ended the call. “You should head over. The team has arranged for a caregiver for me, they’ll be here soon. Don’t worry.”
“If anything happens, call me right away. Stay calm and safe on the road!”
“Okay,” Evelyn nodded. “You too, call me if there’s anything.”
“Okay,” Adam nodded in agreement.
Evelyn hurried out, catching a cab to Andrew’s private hospital.
Shortly after Evelyn left, Charles’s car pulled up outside Adam’s hospital. With a voluntary donation agreement in hand, he strode up to the hospital room. Glancing at the caregiver, he coldly ordered, “Out.”
Intimidated by Charles’s commanding presence, the caregiver quickly left. The hospital room door closed.
Sandy’s condition was dire, and
Charles got straight to the point, “Adam, Sandy is in critical condition, she’s in the emergency room,
waiting for your kidney to save her life.”
“I know you’re standing by Evelyn and that’s why you’re hesitant to donate. But
this is life and death—can you really just watch Sandy die?”
“Why shouldn’t I? Her fate has nothing to do with me.”
Adam’s expression was cold, unmoved by Charles’s plea. It wasn’t that he was heartless; it was that Sandy didn’t deserve it.
“Charles, when Charlie needed a kidney, you didn’t lift a finger. You didn’t even bother to listen to Evelyn. Charlie might still be alive if you had.”
“How could you treat your own daughter like she didn’t matter, while treating someone else’s like she was precious?”
