Chapter 5
“Evelyn, have you lost your mind?” Charles snapped back to reality, his voice cold as ice.
He reached out and firmly grasped Evelyn’s hand, which was about to continue slapping Dahlia. His gaze upon her was fierce and unyielding. Charles was always so poised and indifferent but transformed in an instant for the one he loved.
Tears welled up in Evelyn’s eyes. She faced the man she had loved for ten years, and a wave of sorrow washed over her.
“I guess I’ve been crazy a long time ago.”
Suddenly, she raised her hand and slapped Charles across the face with all her might.
“Charles, it’s over between us.”
She had wanted to say this sentence to him since the moment their daughter died. From here on out, they would go their separate ways!
Evelyn withdrew her hand, her palm numb from the force.
It was the first time Charles had ever been slapped by a woman. His left cheek visibly reddened, and he glared at Evelyn with an indescribable harshness.
Evelyn didn’t say anything more and turned to leave. She knew Charles wouldn’t believe her. After all, he truly believed that she had schemed to be with him and hooked up with him by any means necessary. Plus, she had stayed by his side for the past five years like a mistress.
In his mind, how could she bear to end things with him?

Three days later, at Oakwood Manor, Charles was exhausted and returned home to an empty house.
Evelyn had taken Charlie and left.
His expression darkened as he pulled out his phone and, on his own initiative, sent Evelyn a message for the first time.
[Come back.]
The message was brief, carrying an authoritative tone.
As soon as he sent it, a red exclamation mark popped up. Then, a line appeared below: [Message sent but rejected by the recipient.]
Charles was stunned. Had Evelyn actually blocked him?
His expression turned even colder, and he made a call. It was cut off after just one ring. After trying several times, Charles realized that Evelyn had blocked his calls, too! Well done!
He hadn’t even confronted her about her following him to the hospital and causing a scene with Dahlia and Sandy, and now she was set on making a scene?

Three days earlier, Evelyn had left Oakwood Manor and moved to Maple Garden. This was her foster mother’s house.
Her foster mother had been a servant for the Jenkins family and had taken care of Charles’ grandmother Rosa.
At the age of eight, after escaping from a corrupt orphanage covered in bruises, Evelyn encountered her foster mother and Rosa.
Rosa saved her, and dealt with the corrupt orphanage, using the influence of the Jenkins family.
Evelyn has nowhere to go, so her foster mother took her in. She followed her foster mother to the Jenkins family’s home. Then her foster mother passed away, and the house was left to her. After tidying up the house, Evelyn went downstairs to dispose of the trash and was about to head back up when her wrist was suddenly gripped forcefully. Caught off guard, she stumbled.
A man’s voice, filled with obvious annoyance, sounded above her. “Evelyn, who gave you the courage to block me?”
Evelyn steadied herself and looked up at the man. Her gaze was calm, like still water.
She didn’t answer his question but instead spoke in an even tone, “Charles, let go.”
Charles met Evelyn’s gaze, and his eyes darkened. He didn’t let go but instead tightened his grip subconsciously. Suddenly, a sharp pain shot up from his foot.
It was Evelyn. When he wouldn’t let go, she lifted her leg and forcefully stepped on his foot with all her might.
Charles was in pain and instinctively loosened his grip. Evelyn took the opportunity to break free and quickly headed upstairs.
“Evelyn!” Charles’ voice deepened, and he quickly caught up to her, reaching out again.
“Don’t touch me!” Evelyn, on guard, quickly dodged.
Charles watched her avoid him as if avoiding a plague. His voice was tinged with amusement. “Evelyn, is there a place on you I haven’t touched, hm?”
