“Okay, let’s order,” Edward said, passing the menu to Arabella.
Arabella took it and, considering both their preferences, selected several dishes.
Over lunch, their conversation flowed easily between company logistics and future aspirations.
It was a thoroughly pleasant meal.
The afternoon sun was glaringly bright.
After saying goodbye to Edward, Arabella walked out of the Macdonald Capital building.
Checking the time, she dialed Florence’s number.
“Mom, are you at the hospital?” Arabella asked.
“Yes, sweetheart. Ruby’s condition isn’t improving,” Florence replied; her voice laced with exhaustion.
Arabella’s brow furrowed slightly. “Is it that serious? ”

“It seems to be,” Florence sighed. “The treatment plan the specialists put together is only stabilizing her for now. They said a real cure would probably take a miracle worker, but p>
Florence paused, then her tone shifted with a spark of realization. “Arabella, how could I have been so forgetful p>
“What is it, Mom?” Arabella asked.
“You’re Aletta’s protégé!” Florence exclaimed. “Arabella, are you free? Could you possibly come to the hospital to see Ruby p>
“I can come,” Arabella agreed.
“Then I’ll wait for you here,” Florence said, her voice lighter with relief.
After hanging up, Arabella let out a soft, cold huff. “ You’re getting lucky, Ruby. If it weren’t for Mom worrying herself sick, I’d let you suffer a while longer p>
But if Ruby didn’t get better, Florence would be running herself ragged at the hospital daily. From the sound of her voice, the strain was already taking its toll. Arabella couldn’t bear to see her mother like that.
Soon, Arabella arrived at the hospital.
“Mom,” she said. She’d spotted the weariness in Florence’s face, the faint dark circles beneath her eyes, and a sharp twinge of heartache pierced her chest.
“Arabella, come here.” Florence gently pulled her forward. “These are your Uncle Liam and Aunt Sophia ”
Arabella looked at the middle–aged couple. They too bore signs of fatigue, though an air of innate refinement still clung to them.

Arabella’s lips twitched slightly. Their manner of speaking was refreshingly direct–a charming contrast to their otherwise elegant appearance.

conversation.
Sophia turned and shot her a look. “I told you long ago not to run around eating heaven–knows–what, but you never listen. Now you’ve made yourself ill, so just lie there quietly. All this fuss–you have no poise at all p>
“Exactly. Look at Arabella–so composed, sensible, and accomplished,” Liam added.
Ruby’s face was ashen, her eyes rimmed with red. “Would you two be happy if I just died p>
“Don’t you dare talk such nonsense! Arabella is here now–she can help you,” Sophia scolded. What a terrible thing to say!
“I don’t want her help. Find Aletta,” Ruby insisted stubbornly.
“In that case, you can just wait,” Arabella said coolly, turning back to Florence. “Mom, she seems to have plenty of energy. It might not be as critical as we thought. You’ve been working so hard lately–why don’t you go home and get some proper rest p>
Liam fixed a stern glare on Ruby. “That’s enough from you p>
Then he turned back to Arabella, his voice instantly softening to a near–whisper. “Arabella, please don’t mind her. Right now, you’re the only one who can get her through this p>
“That’s right, dear,” Sophia echoed. “Your mother said Aletta is your mentor. You must know how to treat her p>
“I can certainly treat her,” Arabella said. “However, if the patient refuses to cooperate, there’s very little any doctor can do p>
Sophia was quick to reassure her. “She’ll cooperate. She absolutely will p>
“Mom, I don’t want her treating me!” Ruby dug in her heels.
She didn’t want Arabella’s pity or her medicine. Arabella probably didn’t even want to heal her–she was just here to gloat.
