“Girlfriend?” Arabella was caught completely off guard. For a moment, her mind went blank.
What did he mean, girlfriend? What was Lucas playing at?
Seeing her frozen reaction, Lucas pressed on, “I’m serious, Arabella. Will you be girlfriend?”

“Hold on, Lucas. Just… give me a second to process this,” Arabella said, trying to steady her voice. “Why don’t you sit down first?”
“Then at least take the flowers,” Lucas replied, his confidence already wavering.
But there was no turning back now. Ever since Matthew had swept Arabella away right in front of him last time, a deep sense of urgency had settled in.
He was terrified that if he waited any longer, he might lose her for good. So he’d decided to lay his feelings out there–sooner rather than later.
Arabella truly hadn’t seen this coming. She had no idea how to respond.
Her eyes fell on the bouquet in Lucas‘ hands, and she tried to sound calm. “Let’s both sit down, okay? Just give me a minute.”
When she still didn’t reach for the flowers, Lucas felt his heart sink.
“Okay, take your time. I’m not going anywhere,” he said, forcing a composed tone as he took the seat across from her.
He set the bouquet down on the table. The vibrant blooms felt almost too bright, too much for Arabella in that moment.
She bit her lip lightly, then met his gaze. “Lucas, I can’t be your girlfriend.”
“But you said you really enjoy spending time with me,” he countered, clinging to a thread of
hope.
Arabella shook her head. “That’s different. You’re a really good friend to me.”
“Just a friend?” Lucas couldn’t hide the disappointment in his voice.
“Yes. I care about you a lot, and I really value our friendship. But that’s all it is,” she said gently but firmly. There wouldn’t be anything beyond that–she was sure of it.

“No, it’s not that,” Arabella explained. “It’s not about anyone else. It’s just… how I feel.”

She didn’t know what the future held, but she knew her feelings for Lucas wouldn’t change beyond friendship–a friendship she deeply cherished and hoped would last.
A dull ache spread through Lucas‘ chest. So, in the end, he really wasn’t the one for her.
He drew a slow breath. “If there isn’t anyone else, could you… maybe give me a chance?”
Arabella’s brow furrowed slightly, and she replied earnestly, “Lucas, we can only ever be friends. Otherwise…”
“No, friends are fine,” Lucas cut in quickly, almost as if he was afraid of what she might say
next.
At least this way, they could still be in each other’s lives. If they couldn’t even stay friends—if they became strangers–he didn’t think he could take it.
Arabella paused, then shifted the mood. “So… should we order?”
She hadn’t expected Lucas to bring her here just to confess.
And now, dinner suddenly felt a lot less relaxed than she’d imagined.
“Oh–right, of course,” Lucas said, quickly signaling the server to bring the menus over.
“Arabella,” he began again, lifting the bouquet slightly. “Could you at least take these? As a friend?” There was a quiet plea in his eyes.
After a brief hesitation, Arabella accepted the flowers. “Thank you… my friend.”
Seeing her take them, Lucas finally managed a small smile.
It was something, at least. Even if she hadn’t accepted his feelings, there was no one else in her heart. If he stayed by her side, quietly, maybe someday things could change.
They began to eat and gradually fell back into conversation.
“The view from here is amazing. It makes me want to paint it,” Arabella remarked, looking out the window.
“If you’d like, we could come back and sketch together sometime,” Lucas offered.

“Alright, it’s a plan. Just tell me when you’re free,” Lucas said, a little more cheer returning to his voice.
“Yeah,” Arabella agreed softly.
Little by little, the earlier awkwardness faded, and their talk flowed easily again.
Neither of them noticed that someone had been watching–and photographing–the whole scene from a distance.
“Well, well… if it isn’t Mr. Grumpy?” A familiar female voice chirped suddenly.
Arabella and Lucas looked up, surprised to find a young woman standing by their table.
“Brielle? What are you doing here?” Lucas frowned, his expression turning annoyed.
Arabella recognized her too–it was the girl they’d met last time, Brielle Miller, Caleb Miller’s daughter.
“Wow, Mr. Grumpy, you actually remember my name. I’m impressed,” Brielle said, tilting her head with a teasing smile.
“You followed me around for over an hour last time. How could I forget?” Lucas replied flatly, his tone dry.
“Wait, you two…?” Arabella looked back and forth between them, curiosity sparking in her eyes.
What had she missed?
Lucas snapped back to the present and realized how his words must have sounded. “Don’t get the wrong idea,” he explained quickly. “Last time, Matthew basically dumped her on me. I couldn’t get rid of her, so I had to drive her home. And let me tell you, she’s absolutely impossible–a total drama queen.”
Hearing his complaints, Brielle planted her hands on her hips. “Mr. Grumpy, how dare you talk about me like that!”
“I’m just telling it like it is,” Lucas shot back, rolling his eyes.
