“Aunt Florence, I…” Ruby wanted to deflect, but under everyone’s disapproving gazes, she quickly backed down.

“Ruby, you came today to apologize to Arabella, didn’t you? At the flight school, you told me you regretted how you spoke to Arabella last time and that you knew you were wrong,” Naomi said soothingly, patting Ruby’s hand. “Why is it hard to say now? Ruby felt like she might actually choke. She’d humbled herself to apologize, only for Arabella to act so coldly, and now Alfred was piling on. It was beyond frustrating!

Naomi quickly pulled Ruby aside and whispered, “Calm down. Don’t make a scene. Do you want to be told never to come back here p>
That snapped Ruby back to reality. She forced herself to soften her tone. “What I meant was… I came to apologize sincerely. I really will do better p>
“Mom, Alfred, Ruby truly understands she was wrong this time. There’s no need to worry,” Naomi added, trying to smooth things over for her cousin.
“Dinner should be about ready. Let’s eat,” Jonathan spoke up, breaking the tension.
“Yes, let’s move to the dining room,” Florence urged everyone.
They all rose and made their way to the table.
Once the others had left the room, Ruby grumbled under her breath, “I never should have come. I just made a fool of myself”
“Enough complaining. Do you seriously want to be banned from coming here?” Naomi frowned.
Ruby fell silent for a moment, then finally gave in. “Alright, alright. They’re gone now anyway”
Naomi looked at her seriously. “You have to be more careful from now on. I won’t always be able to cover for you.
“Mm,” Ruby agreed reluctantly, knowing she had little choice but to endure it for now.

“Naomi, Ruby, come join us!” Florence called to them.
“Coming!” Naomi replied, leading Ruby to the dining table.
Seeing Arabella seated right beside Florence, looking completely at ease and close with her, Naomi felt a sharp pang of jealousy.
“Naomi, have a seat here,” Ethan offered, pulling out a chair.
“Thanks, Ethan,” Naomi said, guiding Ruby to sit beside her.
Stuck near the far end of the long table, Ruby seethed quietly.
“Naomi, look at her. She’s getting more and more full of herself,” Ruby muttered under her breath.
Naomi shot her a sharp look and whispered back, “Losing control again? Aren’t you worried they’ll hear you p>
“I’m just telling you,” Ruby whispered defensively.
“You still need to be cautious. Walls have ears,” Naomi warned.
She was starting to feel genuinely exhausted. Why did Ruby have to be so tactless?
She used to think Ruby was just a bit materialistic, which had actually been useful for bolstering her own image by contrast. But now she saw that when Ruby caused trouble, it was a serious liability.
Ruby glanced around nervously, then ducked her head and focused on her meal in sullen silence.
It was humiliating, but if she wanted to keep her access to Cloudrise Manor, she had to put up with it.
After dinner, Ruby left.
Alfred walked Arabella back upstairs to her room.
“If Ruby steps out of line again in the future, make sure you come to me,” Alfred told Arabella.
Arabella smiled. “Alfred, she can’t actually bully me p>
“That’s not the point. Even if she’s just disrespectful to you, that’s not acceptable,” Alfred said firmly.
Arabella felt a warm surge of affection. She nodded. “Alright, I promise I’ll come straight to you if I need backup p>
“That’s better,” Alfred said, satisfied.
“I won’t keep you up. Try to get some rest soon,” he added.
“Mm. Goodnight, Alfred,” Arabella replied.
Once Alfred had gone, Arabella took a shower and then settled on the edge of her bed,
Having rested that afternoon, she wasn’t particularly tired yet and wasn’t ready to sleep.
Noticing her computer screen flicker with a notification, she clicked the mouse and opened the dialogue box–It was a file transfer from Chloe.
