Chapter 295 The Big Appointment
With Susan’s messy public divorce playing out all over social media, she dropped out of the show completely. Good riddance.
After that, filming for Pack Life: Baby on the Way was easy.
No more drama with the other pregnant moms. No more forced bonding sessions.
Just me showing up, being pregnant, and letting the cameras roll.
I didn’t care about the online noise anymore.
The gossip forums. The weird fan edits of me and Dominic. The haters waiting for me to mess up.
Let them talk. I had a baby to grow.
Today was the big appointment. The one where we finally find out what we are having.
The past week had been brutal for Dominic. He worked fourteen hour days nonstop.
Finalizing the pack’s food supply for next month.
Setting up border patrols.
Negotiating territory with that northern pack that always gives us trouble. They finally agreed to give up the disputed forest near the river.
He came home at two in the morning, slept four hours, then woke up at six to answer emails.
I asked him if he was tired. He said, “Tired? I will sleep after the appointment. Today is all that matters.”
Normally Dr. Hayes would have come to the house. But for the gender scan, she wanted the clinic equipment. Better resolution for early term.
She was already in the exam room when we walked in.
“Lie down for me, Elara.” She pointed at the table. “Let me take a look.”
I got on the table. She put gel on my belly and picked up the ultrasound wand. Dominic stood next to me, holding my hand too tight.
“So,” he said, trying to sound chill. “Any chance it is a girl?”
Dr. Hayes smiled. “We will see.”
She moved the wand around. The screen lit up. I held my breath.
Dominic leaned in. “Is that…?”
Dr. Hayes tilted her head. Her eyebrows went up.
“Well. That is unexpected.”
My heart dropped. “What? What is wrong?”
“Nothing is wrong.” She pointed at the screen. “See those two shapes?”
I stared at the screen. Two little beans. Two tiny sacs. Two heartbeats next to each other.
“Twins,” Dr. Hayes said. “Congratulations. You are having twins.”
The room went silent.
Dominic’s hand went limp in mine.
“Twins?” His voice was barely a whisper.
“Twins.” She looked at the screen again. “And look at that. One of each. A boy and a girl.”
Dominic did not move. He just stared at the screen. I felt his wolf stir under his skin.
“A girl.” His voice cracked. “We are having a girl.”
I looked up at him. His eyes were wet.
“Babe?”
He pulled me into his chest without saying anything. His arms wrapped around me tight. His face buried in my hair. His shoulders shook a little.
His family is all boys.
He never said it out loud, but I knew. He always wanted a daughter.
Someone soft. Someone who looks like me. And now he is getting one.
“A girl,” he said again, like he could not believe it.
“And a boy,” Dr. Hayes said with a smile.
Dominic laughed. A wet, broken laugh. “Yeah. And a boy.”
He put his hand on my belly. I felt something. A tiny flutter. Maybe it was just my imagination. Maybe it was real. Either way, it felt like a hello.
“They already know you,” I whispered.
He did not answer. He just pressed his forehead to mine and stayed there.
Dr. Hayes quietly wrote in her notes. She let us have the moment.
—
After we left the office, I couldn’t process it. The walk to the car felt like floating.
Dominic already had his phone out before we hit the parking lot.
He called his dad first. Then his brother.
Then every pack elder he had on speed dial. I listened to him shout “TWINS!” into the phone at least six times.
Each time with the same excitement, like he was hearing it for the first time all over again.
“He’s calling the whole territory,” I muttered.
The nurse at the front desk laughed. “Let him have his moment. Twin Alphas haven’t been born in this region in three generations.”
By the time he finished his victory lap, we were pulling into the driveway. He killed the engine and turned to me. Still grinning like an idiot.
“A boy and a girl.”
I laughed. “Yeah. A boy and a girl.”
“The pack’s gonna lose their minds.” He shook his head, still processing it. “There’s gonna be a ceremony. Gifts from every family. The elders are going to tell stories about the last twin Alphas for hours.”
“Hours?”
“Minimum.”
I felt the weight of it. Twins meant double the future. Double the legacy.
The pack would celebrate for weeks. Our pups would be born into a territory that already loved them.
He leaned over and kissed me. Slow. Soft. His hand stayed on my belly the whole time.
“Best day ever,” he said.
I couldn’t argue with that.
