Chapter 1045

[ 696 words ]

Yvonne was bone-tired from all the chaos at Litamark. Even though the Schultz house wasn’t exactly familiar territory, when you’re truly exhausted, any bed will do.

She slept like the dead.

When she finally woke, it was past ten in the morning. Xander had stayed by her side the whole time, quietly worrying she’d be starving after such a long sleep. But seeing how worn out she was, he couldn’t bring himself to wake her.

Yvonne sniffed and blinked awake. “You’re up already?”

“I saw you sleeping so well, I didn’t want to wake you,” Xander replied softly.

Now that she was finally awake, Yvonne felt more human again. She stretched, swung her legs off the bed, and said, “Alright, let’s get washed up and head out.”

“Head out?” Xander looked a little lost.

“We’re going home for breakfast,” Yvonne announced as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

Xander just stared at her, speechless. Go home for breakfast? Not eat here with the Schultzes?

Yvonne couldn’t help laughing at the confusion on his face. “What’s the matter? Did you think you were back at the Quinn estate? Or did you actually believe the Schultzes were going to serve us breakfast?”

Xander’s expression clouded—clearly, the thought had never crossed his mind.

“Don’t forget,” Yvonne reminded him dryly, “this is stepmother territory now. Did you think you were back with your real mom?” If his own mother were running the house, it would be different. But with a stepmother… Yvonne’s dig about it had already been driving Tristan crazy since last night.

Xander let out a snort. “If they try it, I’ll just trash the kitchen.”

Yvonne grinned. “Actually, that might not be a bad idea.”

It really hadn’t occurred to her before—but after the stand she’d taken last night, Mona was bound to look for an opportunity to strike back. What else could a woman like her do? All the classic tricks came down to petty, everyday things-likes sabotaging meals. Yvonne had no intention of playing along. In fact, she’d rather let them sit and fume in their own frustration. But Xander’s suggestion was entertaining.

The truth was, Yvonne might be a bit spoiled by life at the Quinn estate. It was a peaceful place, but she was no stranger to the games and power plays in rich families.

Sure enough, once they finished getting ready and headed downstairs, there was nothing on the breakfast table.

The tension in the living room was thick as fog Mona, feigning nervousness, was talking to Tristan in a simpering voice. “She took over last night-I really thought from now on, wouldn’t have to run a single household errand. I was out this morning, and who could have. guessed Oh dear, I’ll go tell the kitchen to make something straight away!”

She stood up, her performance so theatrical it was almost nauseating. Just then, she caught sight of Yvonne and Xander coming down the stairs. “Well, look who finally decided to get up! It’s past ten already!” she exclaimed loudly. “The kitchen’s had no direction about

breakfast Yvonne have to say, you’re in charge for the first time and you’ve left the whole family sitting

here hungry? That’s not exactly a good start, is it?”

Yvonne simply stood on the stairs, arms folded, staring down at Mona with open disdain.

First day in charge, and supposedly she’d forgotten to order breakfast? Like she had to direct the kitchen staff herself for such a basic routine? Was the butler just window dressing? In Yvonne’s mind, the whole scene had clearly been arranged by Mona-pure sabotage, just to make her look inept.

Tristan, already annoyed, gave Yvonne a hard look. “Yvonne, you should really let the butler know about these small things in advance.”

“Do I really have to personally tell the butler to prepare breakfast?” Yvonne shot back coolly. “What, if I went out of town for a few days, would everyone just sit here starving until I got back?”

If you’re going to trip someone up, at least pick the right target, Yvonne thought. Mona, you are really something.

Mona huffed, “You went to all that trouble to seize control of the house last night. I thought you had real ability, but in the end you just leave everyone hungry?”
