At that moment, Dowager Vance was chatting with a noblewoman when a servant hurried over and whispered something in her ear.
After hearing the servant’s report, Dowager Vance turned to the noblewoman with a polite smile. “Excuse me, Mrs. Landon, I have a small matter to attend to.”
“Of course,” Mrs. Landon nodded. “Please, go ahead.”
Dowager Vance followed the servant outside. “What did you say? That bitch escaped?”
The servant’s face was etched with worry. “Yes, ma’am. Nissa went to bring the madam some water and found she was gone.”
Dowager Vance’s expression turned thunderous. “That bitch has gone too far! How dare she pull a stunt like this under my nose. Just wait until this party is over, I’ll deal with her! Go find her, and when you do, lock her in the west wing cellar.”
It seemed she had been too merciful with Carey in the past. The bitch wanted to run? Fine. She would break her legs. Gouge out her eyes. Turn her into a living torso, left to rot in the dark. Let’s see how she runs then.

“Yes, ma’am.” The servant bowed and hurried away.
On the surface, Vance Castle remained unchanged, but a silent state of high alert had been enacted.
Rosemary immediately sensed that something was wrong and went to her mother. “Mother, did that bitch cause some trouble?”
“It’s nothing,” Dowager Vance said, patting Rosemary’s hand reassuringly. “I’m here. She won’t get far.”
This was Vance Castle. Even if Carey had managed to escape, she would hunt her down. Tonight, that bitch was as good as dead.
Tina and Carey were making their way back from the ballroom.
Carey gently pushed Tina’s hand away. “Tina, you go first. I can get back on my own. The Dowager has people looking for me now. If she finds you with me you’ll be dragged down too.”

Carey nodded, and they parted ways.
Dressed in Tina’s long-hemmed dress, Carey lifted the skirt and hurried toward the north wing. Consumed by fear and pante, she wasn’t watching where she was going.
Just as she reached the entrance, she collided with someone coming from the opposite direction.

The force of the impact sent Carey sprawling to the ground.
