Emma wiped at her tears, her voice trembling.
“I don’t even know how to ever repay you.”
Alice smiled gently.
“I have my reasons for helping you.
“You should focus on the topic you’re researching for your thesis. Give me regular updates on your progress.”
Emma immediately thought of the lab issue behind the hospital that Alice had brought up earlier.
She grew tense.
“I’m worried I’m not good enough,” she admitted.
Looking at Emma, Alice saw a bit of her younger self–earnest and unsure.
There was a certain kinship there.
“It’s okay if it doesn’t go as planned. Just give it your all. And if it still doesn’t work out, then we’ll change the topic.”
Emma sniffled.
Changing my thesis now?
After all these years of hard work? That feels impossible .
“Ms. Spencer, I promise–I won’t let you
down.”
Alice patted her on the shoulder with a smile..
In truth, she admired Emma’s talent. But even more than that, it was the kindness Emma’s family had shown her in the past that moved her.
Back when Alice was going through a rough patch, their small acts of care–sending her fruits now and then–had warmed her heart when she needed it most.
The boxes of fruits from Emma’s family, though not expensive, were warm and comforting, like a ray of sunlight shining into her life.
She hadn’t expected that a moment of gratitude today–her decision to help Emma–would change both
their lives.
In saving Emma, she ended up saving herself.

Emma , with eyes red, headed off. Byron, however, was still standing there .
“Alice, you’re unbelievable. You came all the way here and didn’t even tell me. If I’d known Emma was your friend, I would’ve come back carly to help out!”
He grumbled.
“ I studied biomedical sciences too, you know. Why didn’t you ask me for help?”
Alice raised a brow. “Seriously? Aren’t you a bit too old to be jealous of a student?”
But Byron still looked wounded.-
“I asked when you were coming back to the country, and you didn’t say a word. Then, you snuck in, married Mr. Nolan, and left me in the dust! Am I just some sad, unwanted old man now?”
Alice sighed. She was speechless.
Jesus ! Help !
This man is 60 years old and still acting like a sulky toddler .
No one could wear her out faster than this guy.
Helplessly, she sighed.

“From now on, you mentor Emma. I’m not the right person to be in the spotlight.”
But Byron was still upset.
Alice finally surrendered with a tired laugh.
“I finished that formula. The dosage is calculated precisely–down to the hundredths.”
Byron’s face lit up.
“Alice, you must be some kind of angel sent from above!”
“Cut the drama,” she said, waving him off. “So, can I trust you to take Emma under your wing now?”
“No problem!”
Just past the campus gate, Sandy had seen the entire exchange–and her expression darkened.
“There’s one more thing,” Alice added just as she was about to leave.
“Before all this happened with Emma, someone tipped me off. I looked into it. Her name’s Fawn Ferguson -Emma’s classmate.”
Alice’s expression turned serious.
“I owe her one.”
Byron sighed heavily, his heart souring.

He wasn’t joking. A favor from Alice? That was priceless.
If he’d known Emma was this close to her, he would’ve rearranged his whole schedule.

Sandy tore her gaze away, hatred flashing in her eyes.
So, this was why Alice acted so high and mighty–she had Byron backing her.
Byron wasn’t just an accomplished administrator; he was a legend in academic circles. Even Sandy’s father, a powerhouse in the business world, treated Byron with deep respect.
Sandy only got into this graduate program because her father had pulled some strings.
But Byron had shown no interest in mentoring her. He passed her off to someone else to mentor her.

She had originally thought it didn’t matter who her advisor was–as long as she got into the program.
However, seeing Alice, some nobody from a small rural town, laugh and chat with Byron so effortlessly— made Sandy’s blood boil.
Beside her, Rachel blinked in surprise.
“Is that… the chancellor?
“Wasn’t he supposed to be out of town?
“And who’s that woman? A relative of his?”
Sandy clenched her jaw.
“Hmph, just look at them. Clearly, something fishy’s going on.”
After she misled Rachel, she froze for a moment.
But then her curiosity kicked in–and there was no stopping it.
“So you’re saying… she’s his mistress?
“Oh my gosh… If he’s that kind of guy, she’s probably mistress number seven or eight by now.
“At his age, she really could be number seven or eight.
“She looks young–probably our age. Geez! Sleeping with a man that old? That’s just gross.”
