Irene should’ve never gotten involved.
This wasn’t her world. She didn’t understand how to handle people from the bottom. She should’ve let Ruby take the lead. That way, no matter what went wrong, Ruby would take the fall.
Just then, Ruby pushed open the door, carrying a small bowl of almond milk pudding.
A classic post–dinner dessert.
“Irene, you’re still up?”
Irene rubbed her brow, clearly exhausted. “I can’t sleep. The older I get, the lighter my sleep becomes.”
Ruby set the bowl down and smiled gently.
“Still, you should try to rest more. Lying down is better than–nothing.”
Irene’s tone remained polite.
“Alright, I know you mean well.”
Ruby didn’t bring up the online chaos. She simply stayed and chatted idly.
That was, until Shirley came in to report that Eric and Alice were here.
Irene’s face darkened instantly while Ruby sighed softly.
“I thought, with all the drama they’ve been facing lately, they’d stay away.
“Didn’t think they’d be this… dutiful, showing up late at night just to visit you.”
In other words, they were here to make a statement instead.
Irene’s face was stormy.
She hadn’t been able to sleep tonight. She felt a nagging sense of unease while sitting alone in her room.
Turns out, her hunch was right–Eric and Alice had come for answers.
She let out a cold laugh.
“I’m only his grandmother. Seems like you matter more than I do.”
Ruby quickly waved her hands.
“Eric’s always been exceptional. As a stepmother, I can’t take credit. Besides, he grew up close to you. I could never be compared to you.”
That much was true.
After Eric’s mother passed away, he was raised by Irene.

At the time, there weren’t any children in the old mansion, and everything was centered around Eric..
But later, Oscar married Ruby, and Matt and Josh had children of their own.
Eric wasn’t that important in the family anymore.
Irene thought back to those days and suddenly felt her earlier worries might’ve been unnecessary.
She was Eric’s grandmother, after all.
She was the most important person in his life.
Even if she’d done some questionable things, it was all for his own good.
Eric wouldn’t do anything to her.
“Let’s go see them,” she said. “They rarely come by. There’s probably another issue.”
Ruby stood too.
“Sure.”
Irene walked ahead while Ruby followed close behind.
However, the moment Irene stepped out to greet Eric, Ruby’s expression turned ice–cold.
Ruby knew full well–no matter what Irene did, she was still Eric’s blood relative.
He wouldn’t hurt her.
But if it were someone else, they might not be so lucky.
She picked up her phone again and sent a quick message to Yvette.
Yvette replied almost instantly, “I’m on my way.”
In the courtyard.
Irene stepped out to welcome them personally for the first time.
Even Alice was surprised.
“Huh. Did the moon rise in the north tonight?”
Irene’s face turned dark. “Do you ever think before you speak?”
“If I did, I’d worry you couldn’t handle it.”
Any trace of good temper vanished from Irene’s face.
“So you’re here to visit me tonight, are you?”

Alice smiled pleasantly.
“Very perceptive. But, no, I’m not.

“You should know better than anyone, Irene–are you the kind of person the younger generations should be visiting?”
Irene had always cared about her reputation.
Now, with so many servants around, her expression was practically twisted..
“Alice, you’re being outrageous!”
Alice shot back, “Isn’t this a place where people can be outrageous?”
Irene nearly exploded from rage.
She turned on her heel and stormed back into the house, unwilling to exchange another word.
Alice and Eric followed, walking straight through the courtyard like they owned the place.
None of the servants dared to stop them.
Shirley saw how aggressive they looked and felt a little worried. But when she noticed that Irene didn’t seem flustered at all, she figured Irene must have made arrangements in advance. That thought put her at
ease.
Ruby finally spoke, “You two haven’t been home in a long time. Did you have dinner? I can have something prepared.”
Alice retorted, “When would you get tired of being this fake?”
Ruby’s expression didn’t waver as if she hadn’t just been insulted.
“I know you don’t understand me. That’s fine. But you’re my daughter–in–law, and I’ll take care of you as I should.”
Alice smiled faintly.
“Is that so?”
Ruby nodded.
“Then that’s perfect. I actually haven’t had dinner,” Alice said sweetly. “If you don’t mind, my dear mother- in–law, would you kindly make me something?”
