After saying that, he glanced at Alice, worried his explanation might upset her.
He feared his words could hurt her feelings.
After all, from his point of view, Alice clearly cared a lot about Eric.

In a ruthless place like the family residence, she had boldly protected Eric, standing firm through all the turmoil.
To him, Alice was the most fitting person to stand beside Eric.
That was why he didn’t want the past to create misunderstandings between them.

“Back then, Mr. Eric ran into some trouble abroad while handling business. That woman stepped in to help him.
“She was impressive; had her own power overseas, made quick decisions, and wasn’t afraid to get her hands dirty. Mr. Eric held a lot of respect for her.
“But it wasn’t mutual. Mr. Eric was the only one who had feelings. Once she got him out of the border area, she left. Didn’t even give him a way to reach her.”
Alice massaged her forehead.
“Daniel, I’m asking about the lost diamond ring and why the police got involved.”
She honestly didn’t care whether Eric liked another woman or not.
In fact, just hearing about it made her irrationally annoyed.
Daniel blinked as if waking up from a daydream and gave a sheepish grin.
“Here’s the truth… after returning home, Mr. Eric bought a diamond ring intending to give it to her to show gratitude.”
Alice narrowed her eyes. “So it wasn’t a romantic gesture?”
Daniel looked uncomfortable. “She didn’t want any strings attached

To Eric, the ring was something of emotional value. To the woman, it probably felt like a burden.

“Right.”
Daniel drew in a slow breath before continuing.
“The ring should’ve been handled by us assistants or the security team.
“But Mr. Eric insisted on personally taking it to the airport.
“On the way there, we got caught in a multi–car crash.
“It happened so quickly that no one could react.
“We were rescued in time, but the ring was nowhere to be found.
“Mr. Eric was still conscious and told me to contact the authorities and begin a search.
“The police treated it as a robbery and attempted murder.”
Alice frowned hard.
She instinctively reached up and pressed her temples.
“But since everyone was focused on Mr. Eric’s injury, the missing ring was kept quiet.

“And since the case turned criminal, the officers told us not to reveal any leads–so barely anyone knew.”
Alice remembered the expressions from the estate that day.
When Yvette pulled out the ring, everyone looked stunned.
Probably because after the ring disappeared at auction, no one expected it to resurface like that.
Even when the police report was brought up, people were too shocked to react.
Beyond that, there wasn’t much else.
If someone in the family had planned the crash from the start….
Then that person really knew how to cover their tracks.
“Daniel.”
“Yes?”
“Was the car checked after the accident?”
Daniel shook his head.
“The police impounded it since it was part of the case.”
Then something clicked in his mind.
“Mrs. Nolan, do you think someone sabotaged the car?”

Alice didn’t answer.
But Daniel’s face turned grim, rage simmering beneath the surface.
“I’ll look into it now. If someone did mess with it, I’ll make sure they regret it.”
Alice let him go ahead.
Eric hadn’t only survived a crash; he’d also been poisoned.
Even without the wreck, he would’ve collapsed into a coma anyway.
Letting Daniel stir things up wasn’t a bad idea. She wanted to see how the real snake would respond.
After that long conversation, she began to feel drowsy.
She covered a yawn and turned to walk back to her room.
As she did, she noticed the bedroom door open and saw Eric’s tall silhouette standing there.
Snooping into someone’s private past never looked good.
And now she’d been caught red–handed.
But Alice didn’t feel guilty at all.
She walked over, calm and composed.
“Mr. Eric.”
Her tone was flat and unbothered.
Eric arched a brow. “Yes?”
“You’re not being a very good patient.”
Eric was speechless.
Her expression grew more serious as she continued.
“Keep this up, and you’ll need two years to fully recover.”
A faint smirk appeared on Eric’s face,
Alice frowned once more.
“Why are you awake and laughing in the middle of the night? Haven’t you heard it’s not the owl’s hoot that’s scary, but when it starts laughing?”
Eric’s thin lips moved slightly.
“You sure have a lot to say tonight.”
Alice was caught off guard.
