Thankfully, all the new equipment was set up in the back wing of the hospital. That way, if the hospital ever needed to “borrow” it, they could just play dumb and walk over.
In that sense, Byron wasn’t as stingy as he seemed.
“Um… Ms. Alice,” Byron suddenly spoke up, his tone almost sheepish.
“My student’s been kind of a handful lately. Would you mind taking him on for a while?”
He glanced over at Emma, and the meaning was clear.
He’d helped look after Emma before, so now it was time for Alice to return the favor.
Jack, standing nearby, couldn’t stop smirking at the sight of Byron.
Byron’s so calculating and shameless .

Not far away, Daniel was nervously texting Eric.
“A young guy just showed up. No older than 24.
“He’s been hovering around Ms. Alice the whole time. Looks like he’s really into her.
“Mr. Reese introduced him, and she seems okay with it.”
After hitting send, Daniel stared at his phone in existential despair.
Eric really was getting up there in age, and after being sick, he just didn’t have the same appeal as a younger guy.
This new guy was a threat to Eric.
“Mr. Eric, you really need to stop wearing suits all the time. Try something more casual and youthful.”
Eric replied with a single question mark.
Daniel Palmer was frustrated beyond belief.
He couldn’t believe how clueless Eric was.
Look at that young man – denim jacket , casual pants , crisp white sneakers .

Clayton looked a little shy. “I’m thinking of switching fields. I’d like to do my PhD under your supervision.”
Alice tilted her head. “Weren’t you studying robotics?”
“You can test me if you want,” he said, dead serious.
Emma immediately tensed up.
Hold up. Why’s this guy trying to steal Alice?
She was feeling seriously threatened.
Alice glanced at the time. “I don’t have time to test you today. Tell you what–stay on for a month, and I’ll give you an exam then.”
“Thank you, Ms. Alice.”
Clayton jumped right in to help move equipment, reading the room perfectly.
Off to the side, Daniel was practically stomping in frustration.
“Mr. Eric, this is bad.”
Meanwhile, Eric was still stuck at the office, cleaning up the mess left by the morning’s drama.
Irene’s sudden appearance had caused quite a stir.
Her presence alone had stirred up all the employees still loyal to her.
And after she left, along with Alice, rumors exploded in the company group chat.
Supposedly, Irene had come to “set Alice straight,” but Alice had “refused to listen.”
No one dared to speak outright disrespectfully, but the implication was clear. Alice didn’t show enough respect to her elders.
Irene, no matter how tough she’d been, was over 70 now.
Even if she said something out of line, she deserved some respect.
People seemed to forget how domineering Irene used to be, to the point that their bonuses often went unpaid.
But now, she rarely came to the office anymore.
Eric seized the moment and immediately dealt with the people spreading rumors.
Just like that, the entire office went quiet.

Ever since Eric and Alice had split the company’s power between them, Ruby had stepped back, keeping- her distance.
She’d stopped fighting and started sitting on the sidelines.
She didn’t want to get into petty fights anymore.
Reporters outside even said that the Nolan Group was thriving and would definitely surpass its former glory.
So Ruby’s appearance naturally caused a buzz.
But whatever happened inside stayed inside.
The moment she stepped into Eric’s office, security was posted outside. No one got close.
His phone buzzed constantly with updates from Daniel.
Eric skimmed through the messages, his expression darkening with each one.
Across from him, Ruby gave a polite smile as she took a seat.
“You don’t look happy to see me,” she said lightly.
Eric’s voice was cold. “I’m glad you know.”
But Ruby didn’t let it get to her.
-Instead, she carried on, still smiling.
“I get it. Right now, you see me as the villain–the one who stole your authority.
“You want to get back at me. Maybe even take it out on your father, too.”
“I’m not here to defend myself. Some things just … aren’t that simple.”
Eric cut her off.
“Spare me. Get to the point.”
That hit her like a slap.
For a moment, her expression wavered.
But she quickly pulled herself together.
“I’m here to talk about the company’s future direction.”
Eric didn’t reply, but the fact that he hadn’t kicked her out meant he was willing to listen–so long as she kept it short.
