My Accidental Billionaire Husband Chapter 183

Chapter 183

[ 1,306 words ]

Katia’s POV

The interview took three hours.

Claire Hewitt from Monde Social arrived at my office at nine AM with a photographer and a recorder and the barely contained excitement of someone who had been waiting three weeks for this and had spent most of them wondering if I would cancel. I did not cancel. I had made a promise, and I kept my promises, even to magazine editors I had met under circumstances that had involved my mother and a deeply unflattering headline.

We sat at the table by the window. The photographer took shots of the office first – the view, the desk, and the wall where I had framed Aiden’s drawing of a racing car, the one he had made the day Gail took him to the Windsor estate. Claire noticed the drawing. She asked about it. I told her my son made it. She asked if she could photograph it. I said yes.

That was the first crack in the professional distance she had arrived with. She had expected composure and guardedness. She got composed and precise, which was different.

We talked for two and a half hours.

I talked about building IG Technologies from nothing — not the version in the press releases, but the real version. The seed money that did not come from investors or family. The Harvard years with a newborn and a company to build simultaneously. The acquisition of Meridian and why it made sense. The eighteen months of Victor Hale’s campaign and the counter-filing and the fraud complaint are now on record.

I talked about Aiden. Not everything — I was not going to give a magazine to Aiden in full; that was not something he had consented to — but enough. That he was six and extraordinary and the reason for all of it. That raising him alone had been the hardest and most clarifying thing I had ever done. That he thought Gail was a terrible cook and said so with complete love.

Claire laughed at that one.

I talked about coming back to New York after six years. About what it meant to walk back into a city and a family that had let me down and to do it from a position of having built something real. About David calling at seven in the morning to apologise for something six years late. About the fact that late was not the same as never.

Then Claire set her recorder on the table and looked at me directly.

“I have to ask,” she said. “Your mother’s interview implied your marriage might not be real. That your family has never met your husband. Is your marriage real p>

I looked at her.

“My marriage is real,” I said. “And I’ll tell you exactly why my family has never met my husband.” I kept my voice completely level. “When I was twenty years old and pregnant with Aiden, I was thrown out of my family home. Into the street. With nothing.” I paused. “I stayed away for six years. I came back to New York a year ago. I do not live with my family. I do not share my personal life with them. So when my mother tells a magazine that she has never met my husband and implies that is somehow suspicious — what she is not telling you is that she forfeited the right to know anything about my life the day they put a pregnant twenty-year-old out of the house p>

The room was very quiet.

“My family does not know my husband,” I said. “They do not know my son’s middle name. They do not know where I live. They know what I choose to share with them — which is very little — because these are people who threw me out when I needed them most and have spent the years since trying to take credit for the life I built without them p>

I held Claire’s gaze.

“So no,” I said. “The question is not why my family hasn’t met my husband. The question is why a woman who put her pregnant daughter on the street seven years ago is giving magazine interviews about her daughter’s marriage.” I paused. “That is the story p>

Claire was not writing. She was staring at me.

“My marriage,” I said, “is the most real thing in my life. The rest is private.” I looked at her directly. “That is all I’m going to say about it p>

Claire nodded slowly. She understood that this was the line. She did not push past it.

The photographer took the office shots, then the car park, then – with Aiden delivered by Gail at eleven thirty for exactly forty-five minutes – three photographs of the two of us together. Aiden wore his navy shirt. He stood beside me with his hands clasped behind his back and his chin slightly raised and looked at the camera with the calm, direct attention he gave everything.

The photographer said he was a natural.

Aiden said, “I know p>

Gail took him home at twelve fifteen. I watched them go and then went back inside and finished the session and shook Claire’s hand and told her I hoped the piece was worth the wait.

She said it was going to be the best thing they had published in three years.

The article ran on Thursday.

Five pages. My photographs were good — Claire had been right about the photographer. The piece was balanced and well written and treated me like a person rather than a curiosity, which I had not been entirely sure to expect.

The interview answers ran in the pull quote. Large text, centre page: The question is not why my family hasn’t met my husband. The question is why a woman who put her pregnant daughter on the street is giving magazine interviews about her daughter’s marriage.

By noon it had been shared sixty thousand times.

By three PM Martha called.

“The article was wonderful,” she said. Her voice had the particular warmth of someone who was about to pivot to a complaint. “So elegant. So you p>

“Thank you,” I said.

“Though you never mentioned p>

“Goodbye, Mother,” I said.

“Katia, I was only going to p>

“Goodbye,” I said.

I hung up.

Sam appeared in my doorway thirty seconds later. She had her phone in her hand and the expression she wore when something had exceeded expectations.

“One million reads,” she said.

“Already p>

“Four hours,” she looked at her screen. “Victor Hale’s lawyers have gone very quiet, by the way. The fraud complaint landed this morning. Apparently there was a conversation. ” She paused. “His lead attorney requested an off-record call with Marcus p>

“What did Marcus say p>

“Full trial. No settlement p>

I nodded. “Good p>

“Also,” Sam said. “Julian texted p>

I looked at her.

“He didn’t send it to me,” she said. “I saw it on your screen when it came through. I wasn’t snooping p>

“What did he send p>

She held up my phone.

One message. Three words: The ring suits you.

I looked at it for a moment.

I took the phone from her hand.

Sam left without being asked.

I sat at my desk with Julian’s three words on my screen and thought about the photograph in the article – me and Aiden side by side, his chin raised, my hand on his shoulder – and about what Julian had seen when he looked at it.

I typed back, ’It always did p>

I put the phone face down.

I went back to work.

Outside Brooklyn moved past the windows, indifferent as always.

Some things you just sat with.

This was one of them.
