My Accidental Billionaire Husband Chapter 464

Chapter 464

[ 951 words ]

Noah’s POV

The house was empty when I got there.

Father never left his study unlocked. That was the first rule I learned as a boy. The second was that the room belonged to him the way a weapon belongs to the hand that holds it. You did not enter without being called. You did not touch the desk. You did not ask what lived inside the drawers.

I called anyway.

No answer.

The key was where it had always been, taped to the underside of a drawer in the hall cabinet, the one place a child would look and an adult would never bother to check. I had found it at sixteen and never used it. Tonight I did.

The lock turned.

The study smelled like whiskey, old paper, and the cold kind of money that never needed to introduce itself. The desk lamp was off. City light cut through the blinds in thin stripes across the carpet. I shut the door behind me and stood there with my pulse in my throat, telling myself I had come for answers and not for the thing I already feared.

I started with the drawers.

Most of it was ordinary. Contracts. Account books. Letters that looked clean until you read them twice. Then the pattern showed itself. Old names. Windsor holdings. Quiet notes in the margins. Dates that lined up with trouble I had only heard about in pieces. A blocked deal from years ago. A leaked story. A board vote that turned at the last minute. None of it screamed murder. All of it screamed patience.

He had been working against them for years.

Not in public. In the seams.

I found the laptop in the second locked drawer. The password was the same one he had used when I was twelve, changed by two digits like a man who thought he was clever. The screen lit my face. Folders. Archives. A private mail account that did not carry the Vesper name.

I opened it.

The first messages were old. Talk of pressure. Talk of waiting. Talk of Celeste. Talk of Julian as a problem that would one day need a cleaner solution than business. My stomach turned as I kept going. Year after year, the same cold interest. The Windsors were not rivals to him. They were unfinished work.

Then I found the newer thread.

No subject line that would survive a lawyer. Just short sentences. A contractor. A car. A window of weather. A warning that the job had to look like misfortune. Payment routed through a firm I already knew. A follow-up the morning after Katia’s crash, asking whether the target had been the man or the wife.

The reply sat there in black text. ’The wife was acceptable if the husband was not in the seat p>

I stared at it until the words stopped looking like language.

He had known she was pregnant. The whole city knew. I had told him myself, in so many words, when I asked if he could sink that low. He had talked around it then. Called the work sloppy. Called me emotional. Told me someone wanted me looking at him.

And here it was.

His own words.

I sat down in his chair because my legs were done holding me. The leather creaked. For a long time I did not move. I thought of Katia in that hospital bed. I thought of the baby. I thought of Julian’s face when he said everyone was a suspect. I thought of Delia’s cheek after my father hit her. I thought of the boy I had been, standing in this same room, believing that cruelty was just another word for strength.

I had wanted him to be innocent.

Not because he deserved it.

Because I did not want to be the son of a man who would aim a car at a pregnant woman and call it strategy.

The door opened.

I did not get up fast enough.

Father walked in like he had expected me. Coat still on. That small, ugly smile already in place. He looked at the open laptop, then at my face, and shut the door with his heel.

“Well,” he said. “Look at that. The boy finally grew a key p>

I stood.

“You did it p>

He glanced at the screen as if it bored him.

“Now that you know I was the one who tried to kill that Kensington girl, what are you going to do p>

The casual way he said it made my hands shake.

“How could you?” I asked, and Father walked to the sideboard, poured himself a drink, and took his time with it. He did not offer me one. He never had when the conversation was meant to hurt.

“The question is not how could I. The question is what are you going to do?” He turned, glass in hand, eyes bright with that old, mean amusement. “Are you going to report your own father for people you just met, like what? Five minutes ago? The Windsors took you in because you were useful and bleeding. That is not family, Noah. That is a temporary arrangement with better lighting p>

“You went after a pregnant woman.” My voice came out raw. “I asked you before, and you were quiet, but I still believed that you would never do such a thing p>

He laughed under his breath.

“Belief is a luxury. I thought I trained that out of you.” He sipped. “The fact that you decided to look for answers is enough to say you knew I did it. You came here hoping to be wrong. That is not innocence. That is cowardice wearing a nicer shirt p>
