Chapter 427
[ 954 words ]
Julian’s POV
“I fucking know.” Noah’s voice rose. “I told him I was done. I walked out. I called you. I’m here. What else do you want from me right now p>
“I want your father in the ground p>
The words came out quiet. That made them worse.
Noah stared at me.
“Yeah,” he said after a moment. “So do I p>
My phone kept lighting up with messages and links. I didn’t open them. I already knew what they said.
The front door opened again. Delia stood there, pale, eyes red, phone clutched in one hand.
“They’re sending me everything,” she said. Her voice shook. “Every message. Every voice note. Things I said years ago. It’s everywhere p>
Noah moved toward her.
“Delia p>
“Don’t.” She held up a hand. “I need a minute before anyone tells me this is strategy or collateral damage p>
She walked past both of us into the living room and sat down hard on the edge of the sofa. Noah followed but kept his distance. Katia watched her for a second, then looked at me.
“What are we doing?” she asked quietly.
“We’re ending it,” I said. “No more letting him set the pace. He put a man near my son. He doesn’t get to draw the next line p>
Noah let out a long breath.
“I’m in. Whatever it takes. I don’t care if it burns the company down. I don’t care if it burns the name. He crossed a line today; he doesn’t get to walk back p>
Delia gave a short, broken laugh.
“How convenient. Everyone grows a conscience after the damage is already public p>
Noah flinched but didn’t argue.
I looked at him.
“You want to be family? Then you cut every line that still ties you to him. Money. Access. Information. All of it. Tonight p>
“Already started,” he said.
“Good. Because the next move he makes, I won’t be calling you for a warning. I’ll handle it myself p>
Noah held my stare. There was no performance left in his face. Only anger and shame.
“Understood p>
Katia glanced toward the living room, where Delia sat staring at the floor.
“She stays here tonight,” Katia said. “Both of you. No one drives around the city while this is still landing. Tomorrow we deal with the rest p>
Delia didn’t argue. She just nodded, looking exhausted.
I left them in the living room and walked into my study. Zane was already there. He set a short preliminary report on the desk — clean phone, fake credentials, paid in cash through a chain that would take time to untangle.
Classic Elliot.
I sat down and stared at the dark screen of my computer for a long moment.
He had gone after my son. He had used Noah’s wife as a weapon.
He had done it like it was just another business decision.
I picked up the phone and called Marcus.
“Start everything,” I said. “Every account. Every shell. Every quiet investor tied to Vesper Group. I want pressure on all of it by morning. And find me the money that paid the man at the school. I don’t care how deep you have to go p>
“On it p>
I hung up and sat there in the quiet. Elliot Vesper had wanted to remind me that nothing was untouchable.
He had succeeded. He had also made the last mistake he was going to make without consequences.
No more distance.
No more patience.
He wanted a war.
Now he had one.
I didn’t sleep much.
The house felt different after the school incident. Quieter in the wrong places. Every creak of the floorboards carried more weight than it should have. I spent most of the night in the study with the old files Grandma Celeste had sent over, going through them again even though I already knew what they contained. Proof of patterns. Proof of patience. Proof that Elliot had been willing to wait years to make his point.
Just after six, the sky still more grey than blue, Noah appeared in the doorway.
He looked like he hadn’t slept either. Jacket on. Shirt slightly wrinkled. Eyes clear in a way that told me he had already decided something irreversible.
“I’m doing it this morning,” he said.
I set the page I was holding down.
“Doing what p>
“A press conference. I’m going to say everything. The school. The leak on Delia. The fact that he ordered both. I’m releasing what I have and I’m walking away from Vesper Group in public p>
For a moment I just looked at him. The man standing in my study was not the same one who had delivered hollow investment proposals weeks earlier. Something in him had broken cleanly the day before, and whatever was left had chosen a side with both hands.
“You don’t have to burn yourself down to prove which side you’re on,” I said.
“I’m not doing it to prove anything to you.” His voice stayed quiet. “I’m doing it because if I keep quiet, he keeps using my name and my silence as cover. I’m done being cover. He went after a child. He used the woman I’m married to as a public weapon. If I stay silent after that, I’m not neutral. I’m complicit p>
I nodded once.
“Then I’m standing with you p>
He blinked, clearly surprised.
“You don’t have to p>
“I know,” I said. “I’m still doing it p>
We stood there for a few seconds in the early light coming through the study windows. Somewhere upstairs Aiden would be waking up soon. Katia was still on the couch where she had finally dozed off near dawn. Delia had locked herself in the guest room and hadn’t come out since the leak started spreading the night before.
