My Accidental Billionaire Husband Chapter 386

Chapter 386

[ 1,025 words ]

Celeste’s POV

I waited until the house had settled into its evening quiet before I climbed the stairs to the old study, the one nobody used anymore except me, and only ever for this exact purpose.

The estate archive was not glamorous. Filing cabinets, most of them decades old, holding correspondence and legal papers and the small, unremarkable fragments of a family’s business that nobody bothered digitizing because nobody expected to need them again. I had kept the key to this room in the same drawer of my nightstand for eleven years, and I had opened that drawer more times than I wanted to admit, always deciding, in the end, that some doors were better left closed.

Tonight I unlocked the door anyway.

I found the folder I wanted after nearly an hour of searching, tucked toward the back of a drawer labeled simply Family Affairs, a designation vague enough to bury almost anything a person did not want easily found. Correspondence, mostly. Letters written in a hand I recognized instantly, sharp and slanted, the penmanship of a man who had always written as though he resented the time it took to form each word.

Elliot’s letters.

I sat down at the old desk and began reading, my reading glasses perched low on my nose, the house silent around me except for the occasional creak of settling wood.

The early letters were almost civil, requests for information about the company’s holdings, and questions about his brother’s decisions that carried an undertone of scrutiny without yet tipping into open resentment. But the tone shifted noticeably after his brother’s death, after I made the decision that would end up defining the rest of Elliot’s relationship with this family entirely.

I remembered writing my own reply to the letter that followed. I remembered how carefully I had chosen every word, trying to explain a decision I knew he would never accept no matter how gently I delivered it. My son had built something extraordinary out of instincts Elliot had never possessed: patience, where Elliot only had hunger; and vision, where Elliot only had grievances. Passing everything to a young boy rather than to an adult brother had felt, at the time, like the only decision that honored what my son had actually built rather than what tradition assumed he owed.

Elliot had never forgiven me for it.

His letters after that point grew sparser and colder until eventually they stopped altogether, the silence itself becoming its own kind of message. I had not heard his voice directly in over a decade. I did not know where he lived now, what he had built with his own considerable resources, or what shape his resentment had taken in all the years since I had last allowed myself to think about him directly.

I thought of Julian and Gail, both of them entirely unaware that this man even existed, an uncle they had never once met, never even heard mentioned at a single family gathering in their lives. I had made that choice too, keeping his name out of every conversation, every holiday, every story I told them about their father’s history, because I had never wanted either of them exposed to whatever bitterness he still carried.

I wondered now if that silence had been protection or simply postponement.

I gathered the folder of letters and set it aside, along with a small stack of financial records I found beneath them, old documents detailing Elliot’s business ventures in the years immediately following his exile from this family. Most of it meant little to me on its own, columns of numbers and company names I did not recognize. But near the bottom of the stack, a single document caught my eye, a registration filing for a company established through an offshore structure, dated the same year the resentment in his letters had finally curdled into silence.

I did not recognize the company name on the page in front of me.

But I recognized the pattern well enough.

I sat there for a long time with the document in my hands, the weight of what I might be looking at settling slowly into my chest. If this was what I suspected it might be, then the man I had spent over a decade trying not to think about had never actually stopped watching this family at all. He had simply learned to watch from somewhere we could not see him.

I thought about calling Julian immediately, laying everything out in front of him the way he deserved, but something held me back, the same caution that had kept me quiet on the phone with him earlier that day. If I was wrong about this, if I sent him chasing a ghost built from nothing more than an old woman’s guilt and a decade of silence, I could cost him precious time in finding whoever was actually responsible.

I needed to be certain first.

I picked up the phone instead and called a man I had not spoken to in years, a private investigator who had once done quiet work for my late husband, the kind of work that required discretion above almost everything else.

He answered on the fourth ring, his voice rougher with age than I remembered.

“Mrs. Windsor,” he said, clearly surprised. “It has been a long time p>

“I need your help,” I said. “I need you to find out everything you can about a man named Elliot Windsor. Quietly. And I need you to start immediately p>

There was a pause on the other end of the line.

“Windsor,” he repeated slowly. “As in your family p>

“As in my son,” I said. “My eldest son p>

The silence that followed told me he understood, even without my explaining further, exactly how serious this request actually was.

“I will call you the moment I have something,” he said.

I thanked him and ended the call, sitting alone in the quiet study with the letters and the filing spread across the desk in front of me, the ghost of a decade-old estrangement suddenly feeling far less settled than I had allowed myself to believe.
