Chapter 576 They Will Regret It
“We’re staying put,” Dorian said.
“Dorian!” Lucinda’s voice rose in protest, her lips pushed into a pout.
“I said, get back here now,” Dorian repeated, his tone sharp.
Lucinda huffed, glaring at Theresa before retreating to Dorian’s side with heavy steps.
All 16 members of Dorian’s crew crowded in beside Patrick’s 11 men at the entrance. The passage might have been wide, but now it was crammed wall to wall.
They settled shoulder to shoulder, knees drawn almost to their chests in the tight space.
“Dorian, we’re starving. Can we eat something?” one of his men asked.
“Go ahead.” He waved a hand, and the crew immediately began rummaging through their packs.
Earlier, luck had been on their side–they’d stumbled across a small roadside snack shop.
Almost everything inside–bread, pastries, anything with flour or eggs–had spoiled long ago. But miraculously, they’d discovered a hidden stash of pumpkin pie.
Four years had passed, yet the pies were still intact. The nut–studded ones looked as though they had just been baked, their glossy tops unblemished.
Before the apocalypse, no one would’ve given them a second glance, but at the moment, they were as valuable as gold. High in fat, sugar, and calories, and practically indestructible- pumpkin pie had become a survival treasure.
Each person had packed away as much as they could carry.
Now, as they pulled out slice after slice, Patrick’s eyes widened.
“You found pumpkin pie!”
“Crazy, right?” Dorian grinned. “Everything else rotted away, but pumpkin pie really does last forever.”
Patrick’s throat worked as he swallowed, staring at the pies with envy.
“What about you? What did your group

Patrick lowered his eyes, shame flickering across his face. “Nothing. We haven’t eaten in days.”

Patrick accepted the pies, his expression lighting up with relief.

“Survival’s hard enough as it is,” Dorian continued. “In times like these, we need to look out for each other. We’re all in this together.”
“Exactly! You’re totally right!” He clutched the five precious nut–studded slices, kept two for himself, and divided the other three among his men.
“Dorian, that’s how I’ve always seen it. Sharing what we have, helping each other–that’s the only way we’ll make it,” Patrick exclaimed, his voice rising pointedly in Theresa’s direction.
Theresa cast a bored glance at the group of fools, refused to waste a word on them, and instead flicked her lighter. With a casual spark, she set a few bills aflame and calmly returned to boiling her instant noodles.
The moment Dorian caught sight of the instant noodles, his eyes lit up.
“You guys found instant noodles?”
Theresa didn’t so much as blink in his direction, but Dorian stood eagerly, his excitement doubling.
“How about a trade?” he pressed.
“I’ll give you one pumpkin pie for two packs of noodles! Calorie–wise, one pie equals at least three packs of noodles. One–for–two–fair deal, you even come out ahead!”
Theresa was speechless.
Trading four–year–old, stale pumpkin pie for her fresh noodles was out of the question. There was no way she’d agree to that.
“Dorian, why bother? Some people can’t recognize quality even if it’s right in front of them.” Lucinda tore into a dense, nut–stuffed pie, grimacing as she struggled to chew through it.
Realizing Theresa wasn’t going to answer, Dorian finally gave up. He sank his teeth into his own pie and gnawed away in silence.
Lucinda, noticing he had stopped harassing Theresa, felt instantly smug.
“Our nut pies are way superior. Some people just don’t appreciate good food. They’ll regret it later!”
To prove her point, she chomped down on the hardened center of her pie.

Her front tooth snapped clean off.
Lucinda froze in stunned silence–and she wasn’t the only one.
All around, others were grimacing and straining, trying to bite into the rock–hard pies. The pies were so hard that they could serve as blunt weapons. A slam against the table would leave a dent.
After several minutes of fruitless chewing, they finally discovered the only way to make the pies edible–soak them in water first.
Containers were hastily gathered, water–ability users filled them up, and everyone waited for the pies to soften before daring another bite.
In this broken world, meals couldn’t be rushed. Lose a tooth, and you’d be suffering for life— especially a front tooth.
“Dorian, what am I supposed to do about my tooth now?” Lucinda mumbled, her words whistling through the new gap.
Dorian eyed her grimly. “Just don’t talk. No one will notice.”
Lucinda clutched her mouth, unable to utter a word.
At that moment, the sound of slurping noodles drifted from nearby.
The rich aroma and the effortless way the noodles slid between lips made Lucinda’s eyes with raw envy.
