Chapter 587
587:
He drew a sharp breath and continued, “Carol, you destroyed my last chance. Your behavior made Linsey refuse my personal plea for help.”
Jeffery sneered. “As your brother, have I ever failed to spoil you? Yet the moment I criticize you, you shift the blame to me. Bravo. I’ve never known such heartlessness.”
Carol stared in disbelief. Once again, Linsey was at the center of her brother’s fury. She felt the sting of his harsh treatment and realized it all traced back to her actions.
Her injured cheek throbbed painfully as she tightened her grip on her purse. Jeffery’s voice rose, edged with uncontrollable anger. “Come with me! You’re going to apologize right now!”
“I won’t apologize!” Carol’s voice cracked as she shoved him aside and bolted from the room.
“Carol!” Jeffery shouted, caught off guard by her sudden escape. She sprinted out of the police station, leaving him racing to the door just in time to see her disappear around the corner.
“Damn it!” he muttered, exasperation clear in his tone. “She’s only making things harder.”
A police officer approached him gently. “Mr. Lawson, let her go for now. You can sort this out at home.”
Frustration etched across Jeffery’s face. He had no idea how much the jewelry store would demand for damages. Lawson Group was already in crisis, and Jeffery had poured his personal savings into key projects, hoping for a turnaround. A large payout could ruin him. Yet he maintained his composure, unwilling to show weakness.
Meanwhile, Carol continued her frantic dash through the crowded streets, bumping into pedestrians without pausing to apologize. “Watch where you’re going!” she snapped.
“People these days!” someone muttered.

“Out of my way!” Carol yelled, flinging her arms. Without realizing, she stumbled onto the road.
A car horn blared, slicing through the air. Carol froze, terror rooting her to the spot.
“Carol!”
In an instant, a strong pull yanked her from impending danger. She gasped as both bodies hit the pavement. Instead of the sharp sting of asphalt, Carol felt only a soft thud beneath her.
Bewildered, she looked down and saw Alexa crushed beneath her. Alexa’s face was ghostly white as she winced, her breaths sharp with pain.
“You saved me!” Carol exclaimed, startled by the realization.
Regaining her senses, Alexa asked, “Carol, are you okay? Did you get hurt?”
Carol brushed off Alexa’s concern, rising to her feet with an indifferent expression, intent on leaving.
