Right now, Daniel didn’t even dare to breathe too loud. The tension in the car was suffocating . Eric’s presence alone felt like it could crush him.

Alice glanced at the license plate, then looked away just as quickly.

“Maybe I’m seeing things, but that kind of looked like Eric’s car.”
Risa burst out laughing.

Then she corrected herself.
“Wait–no, it’s he who’s completely gone for you.”
Then corrected again, “Actually, no–he’s head over heels and absolutely drowning.”
She launched into a song.

Alice had had enough.
To be fair, Risa had a decent voice , but dear God, someone please make her stop.
Her lyrics always teetered on the edge of decency.
Alice’s brain itched like it was about to short–circuit.
Just then, the car honked again–loud and untimely.
Risa was genuinely annoyed now.

Alice said nothing.
Honestly, no one would understand how brutal that was on the cars unless they experienced it firsthand.

The car door swung open.
Out stepped Eric, his expression unreadable, dressed head to toe in black. He stood by the sleek black car like it was his throne.

“Huh,” Risa blinked, squinting. “Did an ice block just fall out of the sky?”
She rubbed her eyes, trying to refocus.
“Did we fall into a parallel universe? Why is that frozen cube turning into a hottie ? ”

“Maybe the doctor–patient tension has gotten so bad, I’m starting to hallucinate,” she muttered, her voice raspy and slightly slurred from the alcohol.

Then–ring ring–her phone buzzed in her hand.
Alice pulled it out and glanced at the screen. It was the hospital dean.
Alice glanced at her phone. The caller ID flashed: Hospital Director. Great. That unlucky guy again.
“Your lab is finally ready,” the voice said cheerfully. “You can come inspect it tomorrow. Will you be available?”
