“This cake is too sweet. Drink some water.”
“Okay,” Yvonne said, taking the glass and dutifully drinking most of it.
Meanwhile, in another hospital room.
April was sitting up in bed, eating a nourishing soup her caregiver had just brought.
Vincent sat by her bedside, patiently waiting for her to finish. He even took a tissue from the box and gently wiped the corner of her mouth.
“Are you feeling unwell at all today?”
“I’m okay,” April said, shaking her head.
“How’s the baby?” Vincent asked, placing a hand on her still-flat abdomen.
After Mrs. Walker had caused that huge scene at her apartment, April had fainted from the stress. When she was brought to the hospital, she learned she was six weeks pregnant.
At her age, April was considered a high-risk pregnancy, and she had suffered two miscarriages before. The doctor’s recommendation was to stay in the hospital for observation.
“You were always so busy with work before, you never had a chance to rest properly during pregnancy. Now that you’ve left the academy, you can focus on taking care of yourself and having our baby.”
Vincent held April’s hand, his voice soft and coaxing. “I’ve already hired a top-tier maternity nurse to look after you and the baby. All you need to do is relax and bring our child into the world.”
“How can I relax when your wife could show up and cause another scene at any moment?” April shot him an irritated glance.
“Don’t worry, I’ve already warned her,” Vincent said.
Just as he finished speaking, his assistant knocked and entered, followed by his
driver. Both were carrying an assortment of gift boxes and bags.
“I bought you some supplements. You need to eat well. You’re eating for two now,” Vincent said, gently squeezing April’s hand.
When April first got with him, she was not yet thirty, young and healthy.
Vincent had a low sperm count, but April didn’t know that. She seemed to get pregnant easily, and she had conceived twice since they’d been together.
The first time, due to work commitments, April chose to have an abortion at five weeks.
The two had a massive fight over it. After all, Vincent desperately wanted a healthy child, preferably a boy.
Later, April got pregnant again but miscarried before the third month.

Vincent had consulted the doctor, who said that if April rested properly, she might be able to carry this baby to term. Now, this pregnancy was of the utmost importance to him.
“You bought so much. I don’t have much of an appetite, I can’t eat all this,” April said.
“Why no appetite? Who’s upset you now?” Vincent chuckled, his tone like he was soothing a child.
“Who else could it be but you?” April
said, feigning annoyance. “Sticking me in hospital in the middle of nowhere. Are you planning on just abandoning me here?”
“You’re carrying my child. How could I ever abandon you?” Vincent said helplessly.
“Then will you come see me every day?” April asked.
She had lost her job and her social life; from now on, she would be completely dependent on Vincent.
“As long as I’m in Istra, I’ll come and spend time with you and the baby every single day,” Vincent promised.
