They worked on Mrs. Thompson Sr. all morning before finally wheeling her out of the ER.
She looked terrible, her face ashen, as if she could breathe her last at any second.
“Doctor, how is my mother?” Frank asked.
The doctor pulled down his mask and shook his head. “Mrs. Thompson Sr.’s condition is not good. It’s crucial that she isn’t subjected to any more stress. If she has any last wishes, you should try to fulfill them. I’m afraid she doesn’t have much time left. I suggest you begin making her final arrangements p>
The doctor’s words weighed heavily on Frank.
There had been times, when his mother was at her worst, driving a wedge between him and Emma and nearly tearing his family apart, that Frank had shamefully wished for her to pass on. He had thought that only then could his life get back to normal, that his family could finally live in peace.
But now that she was truly at death’s door, Frank felt no relief, only a heavy stone pressing on his chest.
Instead, his mind filled with memories of his childhood, of his mother holding him, her face full of tenderness.
After being stabilized, Mrs. Thompson Sr. was moved back to her room, her body now a web of tubes and wires connected to various medical devices.
When Frank entered the room, Mrs. Thompson Sr. was already awake, staring blankly with hollow eyes.
“Frank,” she rasped, tears welling up in her cloudy eyes the moment she saw him.
She reached out a trembling hand, and Frank quickly went to her side, taking her frail hand in his.
“Mom, the doctor said you’ll be fine. You just got too worked up, that’s why you fainted,” Frank said, struggling to keep his voice calm and steady.
“I know my own body. I’m dying,” Mrs. Thompson Sr. said, her grip on his hand suddenly tightening. A strange light shone in her cloudy eyes.
“Frank, you have to save Eden. He’s your own flesh and blood. How can you just stand by and watch him go to prison p>
“Eden brought this on himself,” Frank said, his expression hardening.
“I know he did wrong, but you’re his father! Are you really going to just watch as they lock him away?” Mrs. Thompson Sr. pleaded, coughing between sobs.
“I have no such son,” Frank retorted instinctively.
“Frank!” Mrs. Thompson Sr. wailed, clutching his hand desperately.
“Even a wild animal doesn’t turn on its own young! How can you be so cruel? Fine! If you won’t help him, I will! I’ll go down to the station right now fill see my grandson one last time, even if it kills me p>
With that, she tried to sit up, frantically pulling at the medical tubes attached to her the monitors,
shrieked in protest and doctors and
nurses rushed into the room.
“Ma’am, please, you need to calm down. You must not get agitated,” the doctor said,
trying to soothe her while checking her vitals.
After a flurry of frantic activity, they finally managed to calm Mrs. Thompson Sr. down.
She looked even worse now, each
