Silver had opinions about everything.

This was the thing I was still adjusting to – not the presence of her, which had become warm and familiar and felt more like having a second layer of awareness than having a passenger, but the specific volume of her opinions. She had them about everything. The botanical garden plants and their root system health. The pack members we passed and their general emotional states and whether those states were of concern. The food Martha produced and whether it was optimally nutritious or simply optimally delicious and how those two categories occasionally failed to align.
But her most consistent and extensively developed opinions were about Kael’s inner circle.
She’d been formulating them, apparently, for eight months through the wall. Now that the wall was cracked and she had full observational access to the poker game and the hat and the mustache and everything that had preceded and followed it, she was making up for lost time.
*Nina,* Silver said, on the walk back from the office the following morning.
“What about Nina,” I said, internally.
*She’s the pack,* Silver said. *More than anyone else except possibly Ivory. The pack goes through Nina. She’s the infrastructure that everything runs on.*
“I know that,” I said. “I’ve been living here for nine months.”
*You know it as information,* Silver said. *I know it as a wolf. There’s a difference. The pack’s wolves respond to Nina almost the same way they respond to Kael. Not the same – there’s a clear Alpha hierarchy, the wolves know who holds the top position. But she’s threaded into the pack’s structure in a

way
“They’ve all known each other since they were teenagers,” I said.
*The knowing isn’t the point, Silver said. “Plenty of packs have people who’ve known each other for years and don’t have what this one has. This is something that was built specifically under crisis conditions. When Kael’s wolf was at its worst and the mindlink broke and the pack lost its infrastructure — those people became the replacement infrastructure. They did it consciously and they built it together and now it’s so embedded that they can’t fully separate where the pack ends and where they begin.”
“Is that “I started.
“It’s good.* Silver said. *It’s genuinely good. It makes Shadowmere more resilient than most packs. It also means they have a specific blind spot.*
“What blind spot.” I said.

*Anyone who isn’t them, Silver said. “They built the infrastructure together. They know each other’s rhythms completely. Nina knows when Jordan is going to say something before he says it. Jordan knows what Elite needs before Elite identifies that she needs it. Kael and Ivory communicate in a shorthand that’s older than most of their pack members’ memories.* A pause. *It works beautifully. And it means they occasionally forget that other people exist.*
I thought about this. About the eight months of not knowing things that everyone in that circle had known. The bunker. The botanical defenses. The full scope of what Ivory had been doing. All of it existing in the shared understanding of five people who’d been building something together for years and had gotten good enough at it that the building happened without announcement.
*Not malicious,* Silver said. *Just habitual.*
“I know,” I said. “I know it wasn’t malicious.”
*The Alpha,* Silver said, and her tone shifted into something that had a specific quality to it – the warmth still present, but a note underneath it, *is responsible for the habit*
“Kael,” I said.
*He set the tone,* Silver said. *Unintentionally. Before the curse, in the years when they were building the circle – Kael’s way of operating created the template. He handles things internally. He takes on the weight of situations before distributing it to others. He trusts completely within the circle and has historically been slow to extend that trust outward.*
“And the circle,” I said, “operates the same way because he does.”
*The circle,* Silver said, *operates the same way because that’s the water they swam in for long enough that it became the only water they knew how to breathe.* She paused. And then Ivory arranged you to come here, which added a seventh person to the equation, and the circle – through no ill intent – kept operating like there were still only six.*
“Seven,” I said. “You’re counting yourself.”
*I’m always counting myself,* Silver said, with the flat certainty of a wolf who had no uncertainty about her own relevance.
“Fair,” I said.
–
We were walking through the pack grounds in the specific quality of a Saturday morning – the break still technically ongoing, the pack doing its Saturday version of existing, the weather the kind that made the grounds pleasant to move through. I’d eaten breakfast with Kael, who’d been quiet in the warm way rather than the managed way, and had come out into the grounds because Silver had something to say and Silver said things best when I was moving.
*Jordan.* Silver said, picking up the thread again.
“What about Jordan,” I said.
*Jordan is the most dangerous person in the building.* Silver said. *Not the most powerful. Kael is the most powerful. But Jordan is the most dangerous, in the sense of most capable of damage. He understands

people. He understands how information works. He knows what to do with both. A pause. “He’s been using it exclusively in service of Kael’s interests for fifteen years, which makes him one of the safest people in Shadowmere. If he ever decided to use it differently, the outcomes would be significant.*
“He’s not going to use it differently,” I said.
*I know,* Silver said. *He’s completely committed to Kael. It’s not even a question in him – I can feel the quality of it when he’s nearby. It’s not obligation, it’s not habit in the way that habits can become obligations. It’s a genuine choice he makes continuously.* She paused. *What’s interesting is that he extended a version of that same quality to you.*
“To me,” I said.
*Incrementally.* she said. *Through the months. Each thing you did that demonstrated you were building toward the same things he’s building toward. He’s been updating his assessment with each data point and each update has moved in the same direction.* A beat. *He told you he would have voted for you.*
“He did,” I said.
