Chapter 592
Then the pups found Knel.
I saw it happening from across the clearing – three of them, the seven–to–nine–year age range, moving toward the enormous black wolf with the specific combination of bravado and terror that was the hallmark of small creatures who’d decided to do something their better judgment had objections to.
The bravado was doing most of the work.
The one in the front – a small grey wolf, compact and quick, with the specific energy of someone who’d been told they could do something and was going to prove it – planted their feet in front of Kael’s wolf and puffed up to their full height, which was not impressive relative to Kael’s wolf but was apparently irrelevant to the commitment level.
“We are wolves now, the small wolf said, through the link, in the specific link–voice of a child who’d just discovered they had one and was using full volume because they hadn’t learned about modulation yet. “AND WE ARE NOT SCARED OF YOU ANYMORE.
The clearing got quieter around them.
AND WE CAN TAKE YOU ON,” the small wolf continued.
Kael’s wolf looked at the three pups.
Then he growled.
Not the combat growl. Not the warning growl. The Alpha grow! – the specific register that lived below the hearing and above it simultaneously, the one that traveled through the link as well as the air and carried the weight of what Kael was, the full unmanaged force of it.
The three pups disappeared.
They didn’t run – they were simply there and then not there, the specific velocity of small wolves who’d received information and were processing it at maximum possible speed in the direction of their parents.
The clearing laughed.
Jay’s wolf was nearly on the ground.
“Oh,” he said, through the link. “Oh that was-*
*Don’t, I said, because I was trying to maintain composure and Jay laughing was making it significantly harder.
“He just–they just–Jay couldn’t finish.
“I know, I said.

Chapter 592
Kael’s wolf sat in the middle of the clearing in the specific still way of a large animal who’d done a smal thing and was waiting for the consequences to fully develop.
The consequences developed approximately thirty seconds later.
The three pups came back.
Slower this time. The bravado had taken a hit but had apparently not been fatally wounded. They moved in the careful approach of creatures who’d been scared and had decided that being scared wasn’t an acceptably final outcome and were returning to their original position.
The front pup the grey one, who was apparently the elected representative – stopped af what had been calculated as a slightly safer distance and growled.
The sound that came out was not a growl.
It was the specific sound of a small thing attempting a large sound and producing something that was objectively closer to a squeak with aspirations.
The pack made the sound of people who were trying very hard not to make a sound.
Kael’s wolf looked at the front pup.
The front pup looked at Kael’s wolf.
Then Kael’s wolf lowered his head all the way down, forelegs stretched forward, the specific posture of something much larger than you acknowledging something much smaller as a worthy opponent – and held it there.
The front pup stared.
Then he turned and ran back to the group of children, and through the link I could hear him: “I DEFEATED HIM. I DEFEATED THE BAD WOLF. HE BOWED. I WIN
The clearing erupted.
Jay actually went down on his side.
*HE BOWED.* Jay said, through the link, from the ground, without dignity.
*Jordan,* I said.
*KAEL BOWED,* Jay said.
*Get up, I said.
*I cannot, he said. *This is where I live now.
Meanwhile, across the clearing, Aria’s silver wolf had apparently been watching this exchange and had something to say about it.
*You wanted to run with them.” she said.
I saw Kael’s wolf go still.

“What,” he said, and the word had the quality of something that was trying to be neutral and wassit entirely Acceding.
“I can see it.* Aria said. “You want to run. You’re watching them and you want to be in it.
“We’re on a truce, Kael said.
*I’m not starting anything. Aria said. I’m just saying-
“We discussed this. Kael said.
“Yes, Aria said. “And then I watched your wolf watch Ivory for three minutes and I understand-
*In front of everyone, Kael said. *You want to do this here.*
*I want to run with you, Aria said. “But I want you to want to, not to do it as-*
*An obligation, Kael said. He said it with the flat quality of someone who’d heard a word used about them enough times that it had stopped feeling like an accusation and started feeling like something worse – an accurate description. “Yes. I understand the distinction. I’ve understood it the last six times we’ve discussed 11.
Then why-
*Because, Kael said, and the wolf’s version of the architectural management was less effective than the human’s but present, *running with the team, with Ivory as part of it, right now, feels like – I don’t know what it is to you. I know what it looks like from your side. From mine it’s—* he stopped.
*Tell me,” Aria said.
*It’s been three years.” he said. “Since Ivy and I ran together. Since all five of us ran. And I want that. I want it specifically. And I don’t know what the right thing to do with that wanting is, so I’m standing here and watching instead of doing either thing.*
Aria was quiet.
*I understand, she said.
*You don’t have to- Kael started.
*I understand,* she said again. “Actually. Not just saying
Then Ivy hit him.
She came from the left, which was where he wasn’t looking, with the specific cheerful ferocity of a small white wolf who’d spent three years without her wolf and had several thousand accumulated hits to deliver and was starting now. She connected with his flank at speed and it was objectively not enough force to move him and she knew that and he knew that and she did it anyway.
He turned.
Looked at her.

Chapter 592
Ivy growled.
e–growl that came out of Ivy was not large, objectively. She was not a large wolf. But she was an Ivory growl, which was a specific category, and Kael’s wolf looked at it with the expression of something that had just been reminded of a fact it had known and had not been thinking about recently.
He growled back.
And Ivy went absolutely feral.
