Chapter 567
ARIA
‘How much harder,” Kael said.
Firdshed
‘I can hit a specific target at range,” I said. “I can define the area of effect with intention. Whether that holds under active engagement conditions-” I paused. “Silver and I are still working on the consistency.
‘That’s honest,” Elite said.
‘I’d rather be honest about what I can reliably do than overstate it in a planning meeting,” I said.
Elite gave me a look that I recognized, after nine months of interpreting Elite’s minimal expressions, as approval.
“The moon shield is more reliable,” I said. “I can hold it with defined boundaries consistently now. The lunar scream-“I thought about the six seconds in the battle, the specific quality of the effect, “-is useful for disruption. Not elimination. Buys time.”
‘Buys time is valuable,” Nina said.
‘Buys time is very valuable,” Elite confirmed.
‘The blood-bending,” Kael said.
‘Instinctive,” I said. “I haven’t been able to reproduce/it in practice. It happened in the battle because something in the situation activated it. Silver thinks the trigger is specific – an acute threat to pack members, a response that bypasses the intentional layer and comes from something older.”
‘So it may or may not be available,” Jordan said.
‘It may or may not,” I said.
“Then we don’t build the plan around it,” Elite said. “We note it as a possible variable and build around what’s reliable.”
‘Moon shield and defined lunar blast,” Nina said.
‘At the position with the defensive coverage,” Jordan said, and his voice had shifted – not conceding exactly, but arriving at the version he could work with.
“At the position,” I said. “Yes.”
The room settled.
–
“The pack meeting,” Kael said. “We need to tell them before we do any of this. Everything the war, the mindlink restoration, the armoury, the plan.”
“When, Jordan said.

“Today,” Kael said. “Tonight. Ivory comes back from the lab and we tell the pack.”
“She’ll want to be there,” Nina said.
“She’ll be there,” Kael said.
“Killian,” Elite said.
Killian, who’d been listening from his end of the table with the specific quality of someone who was filing everything and saying little, looked up.
“The rogue wolf connection,” Elite said. “You’ve been outside the pack link for twelve years. When the mindlink restores-”
“He rejoins,” Kael said.
The room went quiet.
Kael said it the way he said things he’d decided rather than things he was proposing. Killian looked at him with the expression he got when Kael did something that Killian hadn’t prepared a response for.
“The link is pack-wide,” Kael said. “Killian is in this pack. He rejoins.”
“That requires-“Jordan started.
–
“Ivory’s antidote and Aria’s channel work,” Kael said. “Which applies to everyone who’s been under suppression. Killian’s suppression is different from the pack’s rogue isolation rather than deliberate severance – but the mechanism Ivory’s developing should cover it.” He looked at me.
“I’ll ask her.” I said.
“She’ll make it work,” Nina said.
“She always makes it work,” Jordan said.
“Will Ivory shift,” Killian said.
The question landed differently from Killian than it would have from anyone else. The room felt it.
“We don’t know,” Kael said. “That’s her decision.”
“Has she shifted since the suppression,” Killian said.
“She decided to take the suppression with the rest of the pack,” Nina said. “During the curse years. She said -” she paused. “She said she wasn’t going to maintain an access the rest of the pack had chosen to give up. That if the pack was operating without the link, she’d operate without it too.”
“That’s very Ivory.” Jordan said.
It’s completely Ivory.” Nina said.
Killian looked at the table. Something was moving in his expression that he was managing with the

practiced restraint of someone who’d been managing things internally for a long time. The fated bond sitting unanswered, Ivory’s choices existing in a space he couldn’t fully access yet.
“She’ll decide when she’s ready,” I said.
He looked at me.
“That’s true for all of it,” I said. “The bond, the link, the shift. She’ll decide when she’s ready.”
He nodded. Once. The small nod of someone receiving something they needed to hear from the specific person who said it.
The door opened.
Ivory came back from the lab.
She had her notes and the annotated structural map and a new page of compound calculations that she set down on the table with the focused energy of someone who’d been working through something and had arrived at a result. She looked at the room – at the maps, the armoury inventory Nina had laid out, the deployment positions Elite had marked – and did the rapid inventory that was her version of reading a
room.
“How far did you get,” she said.
“Far,” Kael said.
“Tell me what I missed,” she said.
She sat down.
And Silver said, in my chest, in the specific quiet way Silver said the things she wasn’t sure about: *She knows something we don’t.*
–
I looked at Ivory’s notes on the table. At the compound calculations on the new page. At the specific quality of her focus, which was complete and present and underneath it, somewhere I couldn’t directly access – carrying a weight that the focus was working to contain.
*What kind of something,* I said.
*I don’t know,* Silver said. *But watch her hands.*
I watched Ivory’s hands.
They were steady. The healer’s hands, always steady. The ones that had removed a death eater from her own body and stitched Killian’s wound and held the dagger in the dungeon without trembling.
They were steady.
And they were holding the compound notes slightly too carefully, in the way you held something that mattered more than the holding should communicate,
Watch, Silver said.

The meeting continued.
And somewhere in the space between what Ivory was saying and what she was holding, there was something I hadn’t yet found the shape of.
I filed it.
And I watched.
