Mated To My Mate’s Worst Enemy Chapter 491

Chapter 491

KAEL

We both stopped.

He saw me.

I saw him.

The corridor was long and had no side exits.

I turned around and walked the other way at a pace that was not running. Not running was important because an Alpha who ran from an elder council member had created a situation that would be discussed for years.

The secondary corridor took me around the building’s eastern face and back toward the quarters approach from the other side. Longer route. More time. But Morrison, who was not young and had not spent three years as a wolf maintaining a running pace, would not have cut through the building quickly enough to intercept.

I reached the quarters.

I opened the door.

I stepped inside.

I turned around.

Aria was sitting in the chair by the window.

“ARIA,” I said.

“Kael,” she said, with the same inflection she used to acknowledge that she knew where she was.

“What are you doing here,” I said.

“These are our quarters,” she said.

“I know that,” I said. “I just-” I looked at the door behind me, then at her, then at the door. “I was coming back to-”

“Are you hiding,” she said.

“I’m returning to the quarters,” I said. “For-” I looked around for something convincing, “-administrative

reasons.”

“You were hiding,” she said.

“From,” I said.

“Morrison,” she said.

“How-” I started.

“Jordan told me,” she said. “This morning. He said the Alpha has been conducting extensive evasion maneuvers and to let him know when you were caught.”

“I’m not caught,” I said. “I’m in my own quarters.”

The knock came from the door.

Not a general knock – the specific quality of someone who’d been looking for something for four days and had found it and was not going to have the knock ignored.

“Alpha Kael.” Morrison’s voice, from the other side. “I know you’re in there. I need a moment.”

I looked at the door.

I looked at the window.

Aria said. “Don’t.”

“It’s a reasonable-” I started.

“You are not escaping through the window,” she said. “You’re an Alpha. You’ve put your hand through a mahogany table in front of the elder council. You are not going out a window to avoid the man you just made grovel.”

“He hasn’t groveled yet,” I said.

“He’s about to,” she said. “Which you know. Which is why you’ve been avoiding him.”

“I haven’t been avoiding him,” I said.

“Four days,” she said.

“I’ve been occupied,” I said.

“Jordan’s count was seventeen separate evasion incidents,” she said. “With timestamps.”

“Jordan,” I said, “has too much time on his hands.”

“Jordan,” she said, “has apparently been enjoying the break very much, despite the fact that the botanical companion planting has strong feelings about him. He documents things because he finds it satisfying.”

She looked at the door. “Open it.”

“If I open it.” I said. “he apologizes.”

“Yes,” she said.

“And if he apologizes,” I said, “I have to accept it.”

“Yes,” she said.

“And if I accept it,” I said, “the break is over.”

“Monday,” she said.

“What.” I said.

“You accept it today,” she said. “The break ends Monday. That gives you the weekend.”

I looked at her.

“How did you know I was thinking Monday,” I said.

“Because you’re the Alpha,” she said, “and you have a practical timeline running underneath everything, and a full week is a round number that your brain finds satisfying as a unit.” She held my gaze. “Monday.”

“Alpha Kael,” Morrison said, from outside. “I can hear you in there.”

I looked at the door.

I opened it.

Morrison was standing in the corridor with the expression of someone who’d been carrying something uncomfortable for a week and was ready to set it down regardless of whether the setting down was comfortable. He was wearing the specific dignity of someone who’d been an elder council member for twenty years and was about to do something that required him to set the dignity aside temporarily.

He saw Aria behind me.

Something in his expression shifted – the recalibration of someone who’d prepared for one conversation and was adjusting for two.

“Alpha Kael,” he said. “I’ve been-”

“I know,” I said.

“I wanted to-”

“I know.” I said.

He looked at Aria.

I said: “It’s Aria who needs your apology.”

Morrison looked at me.

I looked at him steadily.

Morrison turned to Aria.

He apologized.

The apology took approximately five minutes and was the most comprehensive five minutes of elder council contrition I’d witnessed in my tenure as Alpha. It covered the council meeting specifically — the accusations, the implication regarding Damon, the invocation of Kael’s mother, which Morrison had clearly spent the past week unable to stop thinking about because his voice changed quality when he reached it, the specific acknowledgment that that particular rhetorical choice had been both unfair and

wrong.

It covered the broader pattern of the past months – the way the council had positioned itself in relation to Aria’s arrival, the resistance that had never been examined properly, the assessments that had been based on discomfort rather than evidence.

It covered the battle, specifically, and what the battle’s outcome demonstrated about the assessments that had been made.

Aria listened to all of it.

I watched her listen to all of it – the specific quality she had of receiving things directly, the emotional regulation she’d been building for months, the not-immediate-reaction that let the full thing arrive before she decided what to do with it. She wasn’t performing patience. She was actually patient, which was different.

When Morrison finished, she said: “Thank you.”

Two words. The same weight she put into other two-word responses -not dismissal, not resentment, the genuine version of someone receiving an acknowledgment they’d needed and were choosing to accept.

Morrison looked at her. Then at me.

“The council,” he said, “would like to schedule a formal session. When the Alpha and his team are available.” He paused. “There are matters of official pack governance that require the proper authority

structure.”

“Monday,” I said.

“Monday,” Morrison said, with the relief of someone who’d gotten further than they’d expected and was accepting the terms.

He left.
