Mated To My Mate’s Worst Enemy Chapter 617

Chapter 617

I found Killian at seven in the morning.

Finished

Not by accident. I’d been looking for him since the previous evening when the sitting room conversation had ended and the inner circle had dispersed into their various orbits and Killian had gone quiet in the specific way he went quiet when he was carrying something that required movement to process.

I knew where he went when he needed to think.

The eastern garden. The secondary path, the one that ran along the inner edge of the botanical perimeter where the nightbloom’s root system made the ground slightly different underfoot. He’d been walking it in the evenings since his arrival – not the conspicuous version, not announced, just the quiet consistent presence of someone who’d found a place that worked for them.

He was there when I found him. Sitting on the remaining intact stone bench — the one that had survived the strength restoration chaos, which gave it a specific distinction among Shadowmere’s bench population – with the research file in his hands.

Not Ivory’s main documentation. The specific pages she’d given him. The ones about the root removal.

He heard me coming before I reached him. His head came up and his wolf was visible in the link – Kain, present and watchful, the specific quality of a rogue wolf who’d learned to assess approach trajectories.

‘Luna,” he said.

‘Don’t,” I said. “Just Aria.”

He looked at me for a moment. Then he shifted on the bench, making room.

I sat down beside him.

The garden was doing what it did in the early morning – the nightbloom transitioning between its nocturnal luminescence and the ordinary quality it took on in daylight, the change slow and gradual, the kind of change that was happening all the time whether you were watching or not.

“You have the pages,” I said.

“Yes, he said.

“What do they say,” I said.

He looked at the file in his hands.

“You know,” he said.

“I know something is wrong,” I said. “I’ve been watching her for weeks and I know the shape of it but not the specifics. Silver tells me to watch and I watch and I see the countdown but I don’t know what it’s counting toward.” I held his gaze. “You know what it’s counting toward.”

He was quiet for a long time.

The garden settled around us. Somewhere in the main building the pack was beginning its morning – the link carrying the low warmth of people waking, the specific texture of Shadowmere’s morning routines, Ben somewhere in it broadcasting the residual warmth of someone who’d slept well and was contemplating breakfast.

“She told me,” Killian said, “because she needed someone to check the work.”

“What work,” I said.

“The analysis,” he said. “Four years of research into the curse’s architecture. The failsafe.” He held the file. “She’s been the only person who’s seen the full analysis. She didn’t show anyone because-” he stopped.

“Because showing someone makes it real,” I said.

He looked at me.

“She said that to you,” he said.

“No,” I said. “But I know how she thinks. I’ve been watching her think for nine months.” I looked at the file. “Tell me.”

He told me.

He did it the way he did things that required precision – not quickly, not with the emotional weight that the information had, but with the clinical accuracy of someone who’d been trained in intelligence and understood that the most useful delivery of difficult information was the complete version without the editorial layer.

The failsafe.

The original caster’s specific and deliberate architecture. The curse tied to Ivory’s lifespan, built around the bond’s original anchor, designed so that complete removal required the one thing that would cost Kael the most. Either Kael died, or Ivory died. Those were the outcomes the curse produced. The moon child’s power could break the surface had broken the surface, the bond had done that, Aria had done that. But the root remained. And breaking the root completely activased the failsafe.

Silver went very still.

–

Not the watching-still. The other kind. The kind that was the wolf’s response to something that had arrived in a register below normal threat assessment, something that lived in the layer where pack and bond and belonging operated.

*No,* Silver said.

*I know,* I said.

*She’s going to-*

*I know,* I said.

*She’s been planning-*

*I know,* I said.

*The forty pages,* Silver said. *The notes for Margo. The cure in one night. The bench. The woods. The pack with their wolves.* Her voice had the specific quality of someone arriving at an accounting they’d been building without knowing they were building it. *She was saying goodbye.*

*Yes,* I said.

*She was saying goodbye and none of us knew and she let us not know because knowing would have-*

*Changed things,* I said. *Yes.*

*Aria,* Silver said.

*I know,* I said.

I sat on the bench with the nightbloom transitioning around me and the link warm with Ben and his breakfast and the ordinary morning of a pack that had its wolves back, and I sat with the shape of the thing that had been unnamed for weeks.

It had a name now.

The name was: Ivory had decided to die and had been doing everything possible to make sure no one stopped her.

“When,” I said.

Killian looked at me.

“The timeline she has in mind,” I said. “When is she planning to do this.”

“She hasn’t said specifically,” he said. “But the documentation is complete. The compound notes, the procedural files, everything she needed to leave behind. She finished them last night.” He paused. “When something is finished-”

“It means you’re ready,” I said.

“Yes,” he said.

“The Convention letter,” I said.

“Fourteen days,” he said.

“She wants to resolve this before the Convention proceedings,” I said. “The root removal. She wants it done before Cassium’s challenge gets to formal proceedings because if it’s done before-”

“The bond integration is complete,” Killian said. “Kael is no longer vulnerable to the root activation unless forced by a moon child deliberately. The pack is protected. The war Vela’s network was using the root for is over.” He paused. “And the Convention challenge – if Kael is no longer actively managing a curse that Ivory illegally arranged, the nature of the violation changes. It becomes historical rather than ongoing.”

“She thinks dying resolves the Convention case,” I said.

“It removes the ongoing violation,” he said. “The healer who broke the law is gone. The law can’t execute someone who’s already-”

He stopped.

“She thinks dying protects Kael from having to choose,” I said. “Between fighting for her and fighting for me. She thinks if it’s done before it becomes a legal battlefield, he doesn’t have to make an impossible choice.”

“Yes,” Killian said.

“And she thinks the pack is ready now,” I said. “With the wolves. With the mindlink. With the

ariouty and the preparations. She’s made sure everything is in place and she thinks the pack can function without her.”

“She’s built everything to function without her.” he said. “The botanical perimeter is self- sustaining. Margo has the compound knowledge. The bunker’s systems are documented. She’s been building Shadowmere to outlast her for four years.”
