The commotion reached me before I reached Kael.

I’d been cutting through the eastern corridor – the route that went past the secondary garden entrance and came out near the main building’s rear approach, which connected to the corridor where Kael’s office was. It was three minutes shorter than the main path and I’d learned it early in my residency as the specific kind of shortcut that only existed if you knew the building well enough to know the building.

The sound from the gate was immediate and distinctive. Not the emergency bell – not the organized response of a pack activating a protocol. More organic than that. The specific noise of people converging on a point of interest with the energy of people who didn’t know what they were converging on yet but understood that the convergence was warranted.

Silver went alert.

*Gate, she said.

“I hear it,” I said, already redirecting.

*Multiple people. Tension. Something unexpected is at the entrance.*

“Threat?” I said.

*Not attack-threat,* Silver said, working through it. *More like-arrival-threat. Something that arrived that shouldn’t have.*

I moved faster.

pack members drawn by the sound, forming the The gate area was already populated when I arrived – specific crowd shape of people who’d come to see what was happening and had found something worth seeing but were staying at a respectful remove from the actual situation. The security members on gate duty had moved from their standard positions to a tighter formation, which meant they’d assessed the arrival and determined it required more than routine processing.

Rope was visible. Someone had produced rope, which in Shadowmere had a specific meaning in a specific context – the same soft woven transport rope from the cabinet, the same kind that had been used in three other recent situations and was apparently developing its own symbolic weight in our pack.

-the compound, The wolfsbane was what made me stop and properly look at the situation. Not the plant in a container, held by one of the gate guards with the specific careful hold of someone who’d retrieved it from storage for potential use rather than routine purposes. Wolfsbane for a visitor meant the visitor was a wolf and the guards had assessed that wolfsbane might become relevant.

I pushed through to the front of the gathered pack members.

Two people were holding back another person who was – or had been, before the holding-back-

apparently attempting to enter through the gate. Not fighting the hold, I registered. Standing in it with the quality of someone who’d tried the direct approach and had found it unsuccessful and was now waiting to see what happened next.

He was tall. Broad-shouldered, the build of someone with significant physical presence. Dark hair. And his face, when he turned enough for me to see it fully-

The resemblance was immediate and striking and took me completely off guard.

Not identical. Not even close to identical once you looked past the first impression. The jaw was different. the eyes a lighter color, the specific quality of the features arranged differently, as though someone had taken similar materials and built something that came close to a familiar result without achieving it. Like looking at a photograph that was almost right but had been taken at a slightly different angle.

Jordan was there. He’d been somewhere near the gate when I arrived – security instinct or forewarning or simply the specific sixth sense Jordan had for situations that were developing – and his expression was the controlled operational version that he deployed when he’d assessed something and found it significantly outside the normal range.

“You have been outlawed,” Jordan said, to the man. His voice had the flat quality of someone reading from a list of established facts rather than expressing a personal opinion. “Exiled. Banished. You don’t have the right to step back in here. Not at this gate. Not at any gate.”

The man – and I was understanding now, the resemblance clicking into context with the things I’d been told over the past weeks, the name that had come up in the clinic and in the garden and in the conversation I’d had with Ivory in the basement of that facility – didn’t respond to Jordan with the agitation of someone being wrongly accused. He had the quality of someone who’d known this was coming and had come anyway, which was its own kind of answer.

Killian.

Kael’s half-brother. The one who’d been there in the basement. The one Ivory owed a debt to.

Silver, in my head, had gone very still with the specific quality of someone reading a room and finding the room considerably more complicated than anticipated.

“He came here,” Silver said.

“He came here,* I agreed.

*The survivors of the facility attack, Silver said. “They would have found out eventually. That one of their own had helped the healer escape.*

I processed this quickly. The people who’d been at that facility – Vela’s network, the ones who’d survived the confrontation and Kael’s retrieval operation – would have gone back somewhere. Would have done the accounting of what had gone wrong. And the accounting would have produced a specific conclusion about the point where things had started to fail.

Killian weakening the chains. Killian leaving before Kael arrived.

That was the betrayal, from their perspective. And betrayals from that kind of operation tended to be

followed up on.

“What’s he doing here,” Kael said, from directly behind me.

I turned around.

He’d come from the direction of the main building – the same route I’d been on before the commotion redirected me, which meant he’d been on his way to find me and had found this instead. He was still in the comfortable clothes of someone who’d been having a break Saturday, and his expression had the specific quality of someone who’d been mid-smile about something and had had the smile removed surgically.

“I got diverted,” I said. “There was a commotion.”

“Yes,” he said, not quite looking at me. Looking past me. At the gate.

At Killian.

Something moved through Kael’s face that I’d never seen from him before. Not the amber of the combat threat-response, not the flat controlled operational version. This was older than all of them – the specific expression of something that had been buried under years of deliberate non-examination and had just been brought to the surface against its will by the simple fact of a face that was almost-familiar at his own

gates.

He moved.
