Chapter 583
“You were bored,” he said.
“And I couldn’t sleep,” she said. “So. Tada.”
He looked at the table. At the organized rows of vials, at the scale of what she’d produced in a single night, at the specific efficiency of someone who’d been doing trials and refinements for long enough that the final execution was mostly muscle memory.
“You created the cure in one night,” he said.
“I’ve been working toward it for months,” she said. “Last night was the final assembly. I knew the formula had the components. It was just- she paused. “Putting it together.”
“Ivory,” he said.
“We don’t have the two weeks,” she said, and her voice shifted into the mode that had no room in it for argument the specific register she used when she’d run the calculation and arrived at a conclusion and was communicating it from the position of certainty. “Hale will expect us to take two to three weeks to get our situation in order. We don’t give him that window. We don’t wait for him to rebuild his casting capacity and position his network and come at us on his timeline.” She looked at Kael steadily. “We bring the fight to them. On our timeline.”
“The root-” Kael started.
“The root has to come out,” she said. “In less than a week.”
The hall had filled enough that the conversation was no longer private, which I … Sat was possibly intentional. Ivory had a specific understanding of when to have conversations in front of people and when
not to.
“Less than a week,” Kael said. “Ivory, what is-”
“Having that root in you,” she said, “is the equivalent of leaving an unlocked door in the middle of your foundation. Any moon child with sufficient knowledge of the activation mechanism can trigger it. It happened during the full moon incident. It will happen again. We know Hale’s network has casting capacity – they lost Vela but they have others.” She met his eyes. “I am not leaving that thing in you like a live wire.”
“The root removal takes time to prepare,” he said. “You said—”
“I’ve been preparing it,” she said. “For three weeks. The compound work is done. The procedural architecture is mapped. Aria understands the mechanism.” She paused. “What we need first is the pack. We need them to have their wolves before the root comes out, so that if the removal attempt has complications
if we need to try more than once- we’re not doing it with a suppressed pack and a degraded defensive

structure.”
“Complications,” I said.

Ivory looked at me. The assessment ran, the way it always did, the healer’s inventory that never fully stopped.
The removal is complex,” she said. “Removing a root that’s been embedded in Kael’s bond architecture for three years the precision required is significant. If the first attempt isn’t clean, we need a pack that can hold the line while we recover and try again.” She paused. “Not after the war. After the war, it’ll be too late. We do this now, with everything we have, before Hale has a chance to reset.”
The hall was quiet.
Then Edna- one of the elders, the small woman who’d been in this pack since before Kael’s father’s time and had an opinion about most things and the standing to express it — said:
“We’re fucking humans. Are we supposed to hide in the bunker? Is this an emergency relocation situation?
Several people started talking at once.
Ivory raised her hand.
The hall went quiet.
“We are not relocating,” she said. “We are not hiding.” She looked around the hall – at the faces she’d been looking at for years, the people she’d kept alive through the worst of the curse, the pack that had held together when everything said it shouldn’t. “I called this meeting because I made a decision that started a war, and you all deserve to know exactly where we stand and what we’re about to do about it.”
“What did you do,” someone from the back asked.
“I killed two of the network’s senior operatives in the dungeon.” Ivory said. And I told their organization that we’re coming for them.” She said it with the complete matter–of–fact quality of someone reporting a clinical finding. “I take responsibility for accelerating the timeline. The war was c
just means it comes on our terms.”
The hall absorbed this.
Then Edna said: “Fine. What’s the plan.”

And something in the room shifted the specific shift of people who’d trusted this woman through three years of the worst and were still here, and were prepared to trust her through this too.
Ivory looked at Kael.
He looked at her.
“Do you want to do this,” she said, “or should I?”
“I have no idea what this is,” he said.
“Fine,” she said. “Guess I’m saying it.”
She turned to the hall. She stood in front of the pack – her pack, the people she’d built and sustained and kept, all of them here, children and elders and warriors and healers and everyone in between – and she exhaled.

“We are fucked,” she said.
Ke–hall went very still.
“I started a war,” she said. “And the war is coming for us. I take sole responsibility for that.” She paused. letting it settle. “And I have a solution.”
The hall erupted.
Questions came from every direction at once- not panic, the specific quality of people who’d learned to respond to crisis with information–seeking rather than flight. Ivory fielded them with the efficiency of someone who’d been preparing the answers.
*How large is the network? Jordan’s intelligence puts the active capacity at sixty to eighty operational members following the loss of Vela and Alaric, with reduced casting capacity until they rebuild.
“What’s the timeline? Unknown. Which is why we’re not waiting to find out
“What does the solution involve? This is the part Ivory paused on.
