Chapter 591
We surrounded her from three sides.
Jay from the left, me from the right, and Kael – who I’d signaled through the link with the specific efficier shorthand we’d been using for years – from the front. Three wolves in a loose formation around one human woman with a notebook.
She looked up.
She looked at all three of us.
“No,” she said.
Kael reached forward with his teeth and took the hem of her jacket.
He tugged.
“Khris,” she said, with the tone she used for Kael’s wolf specifically – the one that had twelve years of knowing in it, the one that was different from the way she addressed Kael the person because the wolf was different and she’d always understood the difference. “I said later.”
Khris tugged again.
sat on her feet.
“Nina,” she said. “You are sitting on my feet.”
I did not move.
“Get up.” she said.
I looked up at her with the specific expression Nia had produced, which was the wolf version of the look I gave people who’d said something I’d already accounted for and wasn’t moving from my position on.
“I need you to move,” she said. “I have-”
Jay pushed the vial toward her with his nose.
The vial had been on the ground beside her – she’d picked it up when I’d handed it to her and then set it down and opened the notebook, and Jay had apparently noted its location and was now performing the specific Jordan move of addressing the core issue without surrounding it with verbal architecture.
Ivory looked at the vial.
She looked at Jay’s nose.
She looked at me.

She looked at Kael, who was still holding her shirt with the specific gentle insistence of a wolf who was tot going to let go until something changed
“Aof you,” she said, “are using the wolf form as cover. You know I’d argue with you as people. You know I’d have seventeen clinical reasons and a procedural justification and you’d have to actually engage with the argument. As wolves you’re just she gestured, -vibes and noses and sitting on my feet
“Yes, I said, through the link, knowing she could hear it.
“Manipulative,” she said.
“Also yes,” I said.
Something moved in her expression Not the clinical register, not the management layer. The other thing the one that was Ivory underneath all of it, the version that came out in the specific moments when the armor was at its thinnest
She put her hand on Kael’s head.
He went still.
“Later,” she said, quietly.
The quality of the word was different from the carlier laters. Not argument. Something that was asking for the time.
I stayed on her feet.
–
Not as pressure as presence. The specific I am here and I am not going anywhere that was Nia’s most fundamental quality and had been my most fundamental quality for twenty eight years.
She looked at me.
Looked at Jay.
Looked at Kael’s wolf under her hand.
Then she picked up the vial.
She drank it.
When Ivory shifted, something happened in the link.
I felt it a new warmth arriving, the connection point flaring the way all the others had, the specific recognizable signature of a wolf coming back after a long absence. I’d been feeling them all morning, cach one a small warmth added to the whole, the pack rebuilding itself one wolf at a time.
This was different.
Not louder
different. The warmth was immediate and then it muted, the way a sound muted when something absorbed it. There and then present in a more controlled way, the specific quality of something that had arrived and was being managed.

Chapter 591
Ivy.
Ivory’s wolf was called Ivy, which I’d known before the suppression and had carried for three years the way you carried the names of things that were important and temporarily inaccessible.
She was white Almost fully, with very faint silver at the edges that was barely visible in the direct light but caught differently in shadow Smaller than most of the wolves in the clearing, which I’d also known and had also carried, the specific contradiction of a wolf whose size was entirely misleading.
She arrived in the link and immediately began managing her own presence in it
I’d never seen a wolf do that before. Most wolves arrived in the link and their full presence was simply there -the emotions, the instincts, the specific warmth of who they were, all of it present and readable. Ivy arrived and immediately began the specific suppression of information that was Ivory’s most practiced skill, translated directly into wolf form.
Something she was keeping.
Something she didn’t want us to feel through the link.
1 filed this beside everything else I’d been filing.
Then Ivy looked at me and the joy of seeing me the specific uncomplicated joy of a wolf reuniting with her closest bond–arrived before she could manage it, and I felt it fully for one beautiful moment
I went to her..
We touched noses, and the three years were briefly a small thing rather than a large one.
“Hi, she said.
*Hi. I said.
“You sat on my feet. she said.
*Yes, I said.
“In front of the whole pack, she said.
The pack has seen worse from you,” I said.
She made a sound that was the wolf version of the real laugh.
Then she looked at Kael.
The look was brief. The management came back immediately, the muting of the link–presence, the specific careful control of what she let through. But for the fragment of a second before it did. I felt it- the twelve years, the specific depth of it, the thing that had been present since they were sixteen and had survived everything that had been thrown at it.
Kael’s wolf was looking at her with the expression of someone who’d just heard something through a wall they’d been standing beside for three years and hadn’t been able to hear through until now.

*Khris, Jay said quietly to me. ‘is—*
now.” I said.
“He didn’t know it was still that,” Jay said.
“No,” I said. “I don’t think he did.”
The moment closed. Ivory moved away frum Kael toward the rest of the pack, and the management settled back into place and the link showed only what she intended it to show.
But the moment had existed.
I held it
