Chapter 70:
His gaze was so intense, so commanding, it felt like it was boring straight through her skull. A heavy, shaky exhale pushed past his lips, as if he had just outrun a moving train.
“Bring the rest of the emergency kit,” Julian ordered, his tone completely ruthless. “Move.”
The sheer, suffocating pressure of his authority forced Caroline to comply. Her cover demanded she obey a senior attending physician.
She quickly grabbed the handle of the cart and sprinted after him. The blinding white lights of the hallway flashed past her eyes, making her dizzy. Her stomach twisted into a tight, heavy knot.
None of this made sense.
They practically ran down the long corridor. Julian’s dress shoes slapped loudly against the floor, the rapid, chaotic sound masking his heavy breathing.
As they passed the main nurses’ station, Melanie Thorne poked her head out.
Melanie’s eyes locked onto Caroline, who was completely unharmed, and then shifted to the frantic Julian. Melanie’s face drained of all color. Her mouth fell open in absolute, paralyzed shock.
Julian didn’t stop walking. But he turned his head and looked dead at Melanie.
His eyes were completely devoid of warmth. It was a look of pure, freezing warning. Melanie physically recoiled, shrinking back against the counter as if she had been slapped.

Caroline caught the entire exchange. Her brain fired on all cylinders. The missing pieces of the puzzle began to snap together with terrifying speed.
Julian didn’t take her to Ward Two.
He bypassed the emergency doors completely and dragged her all the way to the end of the hall, stopping in front of his private, independent office.
He shoved his key into the lock, pushed the door open, and pulled Caroline and the cart inside.
He slammed the heavy, soundproof door shut.
Click.
He threw the deadbolt.
The loud, metallic snap of the lock severed all the noise from the hospital. The office plunged into a thick, suffocating silence.
Caroline instantly took a step back. Her spine hit the cold drywall. Her hands dropped to her sides, her fingers curling into tight fists. Her combat instincts were fully awake.
“Where is the coding patient, Julian?” Caroline demanded. Her voice was low and dangerously calm.
Julian stood with his back to her. He walked over to his heavy mahogany desk.
He let go of her wrist and ran a hand through his hair, his shoulders slumping with relief.
Julian turned around. He reached up and slowly pulled off his wire-rimmed glasses, then pinched the bridge of his nose. The frantic, panicked doctor completely vanished. His eyes were dark, steady, and incredibly sharp.
He looked at Caroline, taking in her rigid, defensive posture.
He let out a long, heavy sigh.
“There is no patient,” Julian said. His voice was perfectly flat. “There is no Code Blue.”
Caroline’s pupils dilated. Her heart slammed violently against her ribs. The air in the room suddenly felt incredibly thin. The man standing in front of her had just hijacked a medical emergency, and she had no idea what he wanted.
