Chapter 669

Chapter 669:
The look in his eyes was pure, undiluted hunger. He crossed the room without his old effortless speed, but with something colder: restraint sharpened into menace. Each step was silent, deliberate, and furious in its control.
Caroline’s heart began to beat a little faster. This wasn’t the tired, emotionally raw man from the night before. This was someone else. This was the instructor.
He stopped in front of her, his shadow falling over her. He did not reach for her. He couldn’t, not properly, and the restraint in that fact seemed to enrage him more than any enemy could have. Instead, he angled his body between her and the door, close enough that the heat of him reached her through the cold hospital air.
His voice was a low, dangerous purr that sent a shiver down her spine.
“Ready to pay your tuition?”
His words hung in the air, a velvet threat. Before she could answer, he stepped closer, not touching her, not because he didn’t want to, but because the heavy brace locked across his torso made the impulse impossible to indulge without pain. The heat of his body still reached her through the thin fabric of her uniform, a pressure more psychological than physical.

“Jarrod, wait,” she whispered, her hands hovering near the solid wall of his chest without quite pushing. “Beatrix… she’s right there. What if she wakes up?”
A low, dismissive sound rumbled in his chest. “I checked her chart before I came,” he murmured against her ear, his voice a low, conspiratorial whisper. “Dr. Reed gave her a sedative twenty minutes ago. An elephant couldn’t wake her.”
The sheer, calculated audacity of it stole Caroline’s breath. He had planned this. He had cleared the battlefield.
He gave her no more time to think. He lowered his head and kissed her.
It was nothing like the desperate, punishing kisses of the night before. This was slow. Deliberate. A masterpiece of seduction. His lips were soft, patient, teasing hers, tasting, exploring. His tongue traced the seam of her mouth, a silent, insistent question.
A soft, involuntary sigh escaped her. Her lips parted.
That was all the invitation he needed.
The kiss deepened, becoming a hot, wet, all-consuming thing. He did not drag her against him. He did not cage her with arms that could not hold her. Instead, he used the only weapons his injuries had left him: his mouth, his voice, the controlled pressure of his body standing close enough to steal every inch of air between them. His braced arm remained trapped against his chest, and his splinted left hand stayed rigid at his side, useless for tenderness, useless for possession, useless for everything he wanted most.
A shiver wracked her body. Her hands, which had been hovering uncertainly between them, slid up to his shoulders, her fingers digging into the hard, bunched muscles above the edge of the brace, careful not to jar the injured arm beneath it.
The sterile, antiseptic smell of the hospital room was completely overwhelmed by the raw, musky scent of their mutual desire.
