Chapter 90:
Jarrod’s hand shot out. His long fingers clamped around her chin. He jerked her face up, forcing her to look directly into his furious eyes.
“Does being Mrs. Romero embarrass you?” Jarrod hissed, his voice dropping to a dangerous, vibrating frequency. “Are you trying to treat me like a dirty secret?”
Caroline’s eyes widened. “A dirty secret? No! That’s insane!” She grabbed his wrist, trying to pull his hand away. “The gossip in that hospital is toxic. If they know about you, Melanie will invent horrific rumors. I just want to neutralize this threat in peace.”
Jarrod stared at her face, searching her eyes for a lie. The tight grip on her chin slowly loosened, and he dropped his hand.
He leaned back, his broad shoulders resting against the seat, and looked at her with a dark, calculating expression.
“I’ll stop the car,” Jarrod said slowly. His voice was thick and heavy. “But you have to pay the toll.”
Caroline blinked. Her brain struggled to process the sudden shift. “Pay? How much? I can give you my entire intern paycheck.”
Jarrod let out a dark, raspy laugh. He leaned forward, raised his right hand, and tapped his index finger against his own bottom lip.
“Kiss me,” Jarrod commanded. His voice was a raw, demanding whisper. “You initiate it. You do it until I’m satisfied. Or this car drives straight up to the front doors of the emergency room.”

Caroline looked out the window. The hospital was getting dangerously close. She had less than thirty seconds.
She gritted her teeth and threw her pride out the window.
She lunged forward, her hands grabbing the thick lapels of his suit jacket. She closed her eyes and smashed her mouth directly against his.
It was a clumsy, desperate collision. She pressed her lips hard against his, trying to force a quick, functional seal.
Jarrod didn’t let her pull away. He opened his mouth, instantly swallowing her gasp. His large hand slid to the back of her head, his fingers tangling in her hair, locking her in place. He took complete control of the kiss, turning her frantic peck into a deep, consuming invasion.
The heat in the car exploded. Caroline’s lungs burned. Her fingers curled tightly into the expensive fabric of his suit. Her heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs.
Just as black spots started dancing in her vision, Jarrod pulled back.
He was breathing heavily. His thumb slowly wiped a smear of moisture from the corner of her swollen lips.
“Stop the car, Bell,” Jarrod ordered, his voice thick with gravel.
The SUV pulled into a quiet, hidden alleyway exactly three blocks from the hospital. The heavy vehicle jerked to a complete stop.
Caroline grabbed her purse and shoved the heavy door open. The freezing morning air hit her burning face like a physical slap, clearing the fog from her brain.
She stepped out onto the concrete sidewalk and turned to push the door shut.
Jarrod’s dark face was hidden in the shadows of the cabin.
