Chapter 730

Chapter 730:
Sharpe wasn’t at her desk. She was standing with her back to the door, her hands braced on the windowsill, staring out at the training field. Her broad shoulders were rigid, rising and falling with ragged, uneven breaths.
The air in the small office was thick with a silent, explosive pressure.
Slowly, Sharpe turned around.
Caroline’s carefully constructed composure almost cracked. The instructor’s face was a mask of utter disbelief, fury, and a deep, burning humiliation. Her skin was pale, her lips a thin, white line.
She stalked to the desk and jabbed a trembling finger at the small, white note. A sound that was half-laugh, half-snarl escaped her.
“What did you do?” Sharpe hissed, her voice shaking with rage. “What kind of strings did you pull to bypass the entire goddamn chain of command?”
Caroline just stared, her mind struggling to catch up. This wasn’t the reaction she had expected. This wasn’t an accusation of conspiracy or fraternization. This was something else entirely.
Sharpe snatched the note from the desk and shoved it in Caroline’s face.
“Read it,” she commanded.
Caroline’s eyes focused on the crisp, black text. It wasn’t a love letter. It wasn’t a secret message. It was an official military order.

TOP PRIORITY — DIRECTIVE FROM BASE COMMAND.
Effective immediately, per special skills review, Recruit Caroline M. Thompson is hereby reassigned from standard Basic Combat Training curriculum.
Due to exceptional medical background and demonstrated field triage capabilities, Recruit Thompson is approved for permanent night-shift placement at the base medical center to supplement critical staffing needs.
This directive is final and not subject to appeal.
The words swam before Caroline’s eyes. A wave of dizziness, of pure, unadulterated shock, washed over her. He hadn’t just sent a message. He had reached down from on high and rewritten the rules of her world. He had used a sledgehammer to crack a nut.
“This is an insult,” Sharpe seethed, snatching the order back and slamming it on the desk. “An insult to me, to this program, to every recruit out there earning their place with blood and sweat.”
She pointed a shaking finger at Caroline. “You’re a coward, Thompson. A fraud, using your connections to escape the hard work.”
The shock began to recede, replaced by a giddy, overwhelming wave of relief and a fierce, possessive love for the man who would burn down the world to keep her safe.
But on the outside, she was a blank slate. Her face was a perfect mask of polite confusion.
“Ma’am,” she said, her voice calm and steady. “I simply submitted a request to have my prior medical experience considered for special placement. I had no idea command would take it so seriously.”
The lie was perfect. It was official. It was bureaucratic. And with the base commander’s digital signature glowing at the bottom of the order, it was utterly irrefutable.
Sharpe stared at her, her jaw working, but no words came out. She was trapped, outmaneuvered by a power she couldn’t fight. The rage in her eyes was slowly being replaced by the cold, dead look of defeat.
Her chest heaved with a final, shuddering breath of fury.
