Chapter 573:
She finished, her heart hammering against her ribs. She had just signed her own death warrant. She had attacked his blood. His granddaughter.
The General’s face, which had been a mask of neutral inquiry, hardened. The lines around his mouth tightened. He said nothing.
He just stared at her.
The silence stretched for ten seconds. Twenty. Thirty.
It was the longest minute of her life. The air grew thick, heavy, unbreathable. Cold sweat trickled down her spine. She had miscalculated. She had overplayed her hand. She had mistaken his affection for a license to speak freely, and now she was going to pay the price.
She was about to open her mouth, to apologize, to retract, to try and salvage the wreckage of her catastrophic mistake.
And then he smiled.
It wasn’t a small smile. It was a huge, booming, magnificent grin that transformed his entire face, erasing years of command and sorrow.
He slammed his hand down on the polished surface of his desk, the sound echoing like a gunshot.

A great, rumbling laugh erupted from his chest. It was a sound of pure, unadulterated triumph.
“By God, you’ve got ice water in your veins, girl,” he boomed, his eyes shining with a fierce, proud light. “I knew I liked you.”
He leaned forward, his expression conspiratorial. “Her application was rejected an hour ago. I just wanted to see if you had the guts to say what we were all thinking.”
The tension in Caroline’s body snapped. A wave of relief so profound it made her feel light-headed washed over her. She sank into the leather chair opposite his desk, her legs suddenly unable to support her.
She let out a shaky breath. “Grandpa,” she confessed, her voice trembling slightly. “You scared the hell out of me. I thought… I thought blood would always be thicker than water.”
She was admitting her deepest fear. That as an outsider, she would never truly belong. That she would always be disposable.
The General’s smile faded, replaced by a look of sober seriousness. He leaned forward, his expression earnest.
“Loyalty is thicker than blood, Caroline,” he said, his voice a low, solemn vow. “And you have shown more loyalty to this family in three months than she has in her entire life.”
He sighed, a sound heavy with a weariness that went beyond his years. “I worry about her. Her mother… Cornelia has filled her head with poison. Ambition without principle. It’s a dangerous combination. It’s what destroyed my son.”
He was sharing a piece of his soul with her. A confession of his own failure as a patriarch. He was trusting her not just with his family’s future, but with its painful past.
“Blood can be a curse,” he murmured, more to himself than to her. “It can poison the well for everyone.”
In that moment, she understood him completely. The weight he carried. The impossible choices he had to make. He was not just a general; he was a king, presiding over a fractured, warring dynasty.
