Chapter 76:
“Disappointed the patient isn’t in a body bag?”
Melanie let out a blood-curdling shriek.
She spun around so fast her feet tangled, her back slamming violently against the heavy wooden door.
Caroline was standing right there. She had moved completely silently, stepping out of the blind spot like a ghost. Her arms were crossed over her chest, and she was looking down at Melanie like she was a piece of rotting garbage.
Down the hall, Tammy gasped and stumbled backward, hitting the wall and sliding down into a crouch, covering her mouth.
Melanie’s chest heaved. She pointed a shaking finger at Caroline. “How… how did you sneak up on me?” she stammered, her voice shrill.
Caroline uncrossed her arms and took a slow, deliberate step forward. Her height and physical presence completely eclipsed Melanie, trapping her against the door.
Caroline raised her right hand, extended her index finger, and pressed it hard against Melanie’s collarbone.
“This is the absolute last time I tolerate your stupidity,” Caroline warned, her voice a low, vibrating threat. “If you ever cross my path again, losing your nursing license will be the least of your problems.”
The physical pain of the finger digging into her bone, combined with the sheer humiliation, snapped the last thread of Melanie’s sanity.
Her toxic jealousy exploded.

Melanie slapped Caroline’s hand away. “You think you’re so special?” she hissed, her face twisting into an ugly sneer. “You’re nothing but a cheap whore who slept her way into a military officer’s bed! That’s the only reason you’re still here!”
The air in the hallway instantly froze.
The temperature in Caroline’s gray eyes dropped to absolute zero. The violent, suppressed instincts of a CIA operative shattered the nurse facade completely.
Caroline’s hand shot out. She grabbed the thick collar of Melanie’s scrub top, and with a terrifying surge of speed, slammed Melanie back against the wall, pinning her by the shoulders with a force that knocked the air from her lungs.
Melanie’s head cracked against the drywall with a sickening thud, pinning her entirely under Caroline’s ruthless leverage.
Melanie gasped for air, her hands flying up to claw frantically at Caroline’s iron grip. Real, unfiltered terror finally flooded her eyes. She couldn’t move.
Caroline leaned in until their noses were almost touching.
“You better get down on your knees and pray,” Caroline whispered, every word dripping with genuine, lethal intent, “that the officer never finds out what you did today. Because if he does, he will make you beg for death.”
The absolute certainty in Caroline’s voice made Melanie’s blood run cold. She knew, in that exact second, that Caroline wasn’t bluffing.
Caroline opened her hand, shoving Melanie away like a sack of trash.
Melanie crumpled to the floor, clutching her bruised shoulders, coughing violently as oxygen rushed back into her lungs.
Tammy scrambled forward on her hands and knees, trying to help Melanie up, but Melanie shoved her away with a weak, angry cry.
Caroline looked down at them one last time.
“Game over,” she stated flatly.
