Chapter 647:
“Patient is a female, early twenties. Multiple contusions to the face and torso. Possible fractured ribs on the right side. Pupils are sluggishly reactive. Suspected concussion. Get her on a monitor and start a saline drip.”
The medics stared at her, their training kicking in. They responded to the authority in her voice, moving to attach electrodes and prep an IV line without question.
A sharp clicking of heels on the linoleum floor announced a new arrival. A woman in a starched white coat with captain’s bars on the collar strode out of an office, her expression stern. Dr. Evelyn Reed, the Chief Medical Officer.
Her eyes took in the scene in a single, sweeping glance: the injured recruit, the blood, and Caroline, standing over the gurney like a guardian angel forged in steel. Dr. Reed’s gaze lingered on Caroline for a fraction of a second, a flicker of recognition in her eyes.
“Get her into Trauma Bay One,” Dr. Reed commanded the medics, her voice calm and absolute. As they wheeled Beatrix away, her attention turned to the small, whimpering bundle still braced in the folded jacket near Caroline’s side. “The army doesn’t run a veterinary clinic, Thompson.”
Caroline met her gaze, her own eyes a silent, desperate plea.

Dr. Reed held her stare for a long moment, then let out a resigned sigh. “Oh, for God’s sake.” She gestured to another corpsman. “Get me a splint kit and some canine-dose tramadol. Bring it to my office.” She gently took the injured puppy from the makeshift jacket cradle.
The moment the puppy was safe, the adrenaline that had been coursing through Caroline’s veins vanished. A wave of exhaustion washed over her, so profound her knees buckled. She leaned back against the cool, sterile wall, her legs trembling. Her hands, caked in Beatrix’s drying blood, began to shake.
Dr. Reed appeared at her side, pressing a clean, sterile towel into her trembling hands. “What happened?” she asked, her voice low. “Who did this?”
“Blair Knight,” Caroline said, her voice flat as she scrubbed at the blood.
Dr. Reed’s brow furrowed. “Knight has connections on this base. Her uncle is a Lieutenant Colonel in Logistics. This is going to get messy.”
Caroline tossed the blood-soaked towel into a biohazard bin. Her eyes were cold, devoid of fear. “I don’t care who her uncle is,” she said. “The rules here are about to change.”
Miles away, hiding behind the administrative building, one of Blair’s followers was on her phone, her voice a nervous whisper.
“Yeah, it’s me. Blair wants you to pull a file. Name is Caroline Thompson. Alpha Platoon.”
She was talking to a cousin, a low-level clerk in the personnel office. A few minutes of silence passed, filled only by the nervous tapping of the recruit’s foot.
Then, the clerk’s voice came back, tight with confusion and fear. “I can’t. I mean, I can pull the cover sheet, but that’s it. This file is weird.”
“What do you mean, weird?”
