Chapter 267:
His rough, calloused fingers, burning with unnatural heat, pressed directly against the bare, sensitive skin of her stomach. He dragged his hand upward, his grip bruising, trying to physically brand his ownership into her flesh.
Tears of pain and frustration pricked the corners of Caroline’s eyes.
She couldn’t take it anymore.
“Is this how you win?” Caroline screamed against his mouth. She jerked her head away, gasping for air. “You’re just a tyrant! You strip away my freedom, you lock me in a cage, and you treat me like a piece of property!”
The word tyrant hit Jarrod like a bullet.
He froze. His hand stopped moving on her skin.
He slowly lifted his head. His chest heaved. The violent lust in his eyes fractured, revealing a deep, bottomless well of agony.
He grabbed both of her wrists with his left hand. He pinned them above her head against the leather. He pressed his left forearm across them, holding her still, then slid his hand to the back of her neck. His right arm remained motionless against his side.

“Yes. I am a tyrant,” Jarrod confessed, his voice a broken, ragged whisper. “Because if freedom means you walk into a room full of butchers… if freedom means I have to see another man holding you…”
Jarrod closed his eyes. A shudder of pure, agonizing terror ripped through his massive frame.
“I will break your wings,” Jarrod vowed, his voice thick with a sick, desperate devotion. “I will lock you in my bed for the rest of your life before I let them take you from me.”
Caroline stopped struggling.
She stared at the most dangerous man in Washington. He wasn’t acting out of malice. He was acting out of a paralyzing, mind-destroying fear of losing her.
The iron walls around Caroline’s heart suddenly cracked.
A single, hot tear spilled from the corner of her eye. It rolled down her cheek and dropped onto the back of Jarrod’s hand.
The tiny drop of water hit his skin like a drop of boiling acid.
Jarrod gasped. His eyes snapped open. The feral madness instantly vanished, washed away by a wave of crushing, self-loathing regret.
He let go of her wrists.
He collapsed forward. He wrapped his left arm around her small body, pulling her tight against his chest. He buried his face deep into the crook of her neck.
He held her with a desperate, suffocating grip, burying his face in her hair, his massive shoulders trembling in the dark cabin.
The heavy armored SUV slowly descended into the private underground parking garage of the high-rise building.
The low, powerful purr of the engine echoed off the thick concrete walls.
In the dark rear cabin, Jarrod finally loosened his suffocating grip on Caroline. His massive chest still heaved slightly from the emotional aftermath of their intense confrontation. The feral madness had receded, leaving behind a heavy, exhausted silence.
Caroline leaned back against the cold leather seat.
