Chapter 105:
Caroline stood in the center of the room. The midnight-blue velvet clung perfectly to every curve of her body. The deep, backless cut exposed the smooth, pale skin of her spine, making her look like a dark, dangerous rose blooming in the shadows.
Jarrod was leaning back against a tufted velvet sofa. The moment his eyes landed on her, the casual indifference completely vanished from his face.
His gray eyes turned pitch black. His jaw locked tight. His Adam’s apple bobbed heavily against his throat as he swallowed.
He stood up and walked toward her with slow, predatory strides. The sheer physical dominance radiating from his massive frame sucked the oxygen out of the room. He stopped inches from her, his eyes dragging over her body inch by inch, inspecting his absolute territory.
The heat coming off his body made Caroline’s skin burn. Her heart hammered against her ribs. She instinctively wanted to take a step back, but her bare feet remained frozen on the carpet.
Linda quickly broke the heavy, suffocating silence. She stepped forward, holding a pair of diamond-encrusted stilettos with terrifying four-inch heels.
“The final touch to complete the look, Mrs. Romero,” Linda said with a tight, professional smile.
Caroline stared at the needle-thin heels. Her brow furrowed. She was a trained operative used to flat tactical boots. Those shoes looked like medieval torture devices.

She reached her hand out to take them.
Jarrod moved faster. His large hand shot out and snatched the expensive shoes right out of Linda’s grasp.
Caroline blinked in shock. Linda gasped softly.
The untouchable, ruthless colonel of the Department of Defense slowly lowered his massive frame. He dropped down onto one knee, right onto the thick carpet, directly in front of Caroline.
Jarrod reached out with his left hand, his uninjured arm, and his large, calloused fingers wrapped firmly around her delicate ankle. The movement was deliberate, favoring the side that had not taken the brunt of the stairwell impact.
A violent jolt of electricity shot straight up Caroline’s leg. She gasped, her fingers digging into the velvet fabric of her dress.
His grip was incredibly gentle but possessed a terrifying, underlying strength. He guided her bare foot into the tight, restrictive arch of the stiletto. As he secured the strap, the rough pad of his thumb deliberately dragged across the sensitive skin of her instep.
Caroline’s entire body shivered. Her knees went weak.
Jarrod stood up slowly, his right shoulder held carefully still. He held out his left arm, offering his forearm as a solid brace.
“Walk,” Jarrod ordered softly.
Caroline took a deep breath and shifted her weight, trying to take a step forward. The four-inch heel instantly destroyed her center of gravity. The thick, plush carpet beneath her feet made it impossible to find a solid grip.
Her ankle violently twisted to the side.
Caroline’s body pitched forward, but instead of crying out, her jaw clenched. In a flash of pure instinct, she twisted her hips and bent her knees, attempting to convert the clumsy fall into a controlled, tactical roll. Her training screamed at her to protect her head, to minimize the impact.
