Chapter 143:
Jarrod’s rigid shoulders dropped a fraction of an inch. A heavy breath escaped his lips.
He turned and pointed to the glass coffee table. Six massive, glossy shopping bags from high-end designer boutiques were piled on the floor.
“I had Bell make some calls at dawn,” Jarrod explained, his tone careful. “He arranged for these to be delivered first thing this morning. I didn’t know your exact measurements. I told the clerks to pack one of everything in your general size.”
Caroline walked closer. She looked inside the bags. There were silk blouses, tailored trousers, cashmere sweaters, and expensive lingerie sets.
He had remembered her humiliating lack of clothes from last night and fixed the problem before she even woke up.
“I hope these make you feel… a little more comfortable here,” Jarrod added quietly.
Caroline reached into the nearest bag. Her fingers brushed against a strange, heavy fabric. She pulled it out.
It was a neon pink, sequin-covered mini dress with a plunging neckline. It looked like something designed for a wild night at a Las Vegas club.

Caroline held the dress up by the thin straps. She raised an eyebrow.
She looked directly at Jarrod. A mischievous smirk pulled at the corner of her lips.
“Is this the Colonel’s idea of appropriate hospital commuting attire?” Caroline asked.
Jarrod stared at the blinding pink sequins. He blinked. He clearly had not checked the contents of the bags before Bell dropped them off.
A dark flush of embarrassment crept up his thick neck. The cold, terrifying military commander looked completely mortified.
“That is Bell’s terrible judgment,” Jarrod muttered, rubbing the back of his neck. “I am docking his pay for the next two weeks.”
Caroline couldn’t hold it in anymore. A subtle, genuinely amused smirk pulled at her lips, and a soft, restrained chuckle escaped her throat. In the massive, sterile living room, even that quiet sound of levity felt incredibly distinct.
Jarrod froze. He stared at her face. The rare, unguarded sound of her amusement completely wiped the dark exhaustion from his eyes. He looked completely mesmerized.
Caroline tossed the sequin dress back into the bag. She dug into another bag and pulled out a soft, beige cashmere lounge set and a matching set of simple cotton underwear.
She clutched the clothes to her chest. She looked up at him. The teasing light in her eyes faded into something incredibly soft.
“Thank you, Jarrod,” Caroline said softly.
It wasn’t just for the clothes. It was for the sofa, the blanket, and the space he had given her.
Jarrod’s Adam’s apple bobbed. He took a half-step toward her. His hands twitched at his sides, fighting the overwhelming urge to pull her into his arms.
He forced himself to stop.
“Go change,” Jarrod said, his voice dropping to a low, warm rumble. “There are fresh toiletries in the bathroom.”
Caroline nodded. She turned around and walked back toward the master bedroom. Her steps were light and easy.
