Chapter 253:
She pushed through the revolving glass doors and stepped out into the cool autumn night.
The crisp air hit her face. It tasted like absolute freedom.
She raised her hand and flagged down a passing yellow cab.
“Georgetown,” Caroline told the driver, sliding into the cracked leather seat. “The Obsidian.”
The cab merged into the heavy D.C. traffic, carrying her away from the fortress and straight into the unknown.
The yellow cab pulled up to the curb on a busy cobblestone street in Georgetown.
Caroline pushed the door open. The night air was thick with the smell of expensive cologne, spilled alcohol, and exhaust fumes.
She looked up at the building. A sleek, black awning read The Obsidian. Two massive bouncers in tailored black suits stood behind a velvet rope, checking IDs with cold efficiency.

Caroline walked toward the entrance. Before she could even say Julian’s name, the heavy soundproof door swung open.
Brenna ran out. She wore a tight, sparkling silver sequin dress.
“You actually came!” Brenna squealed, grabbing Caroline’s arm. She pulled her right past the bouncers, completely ignoring the velvet rope.
Brenna looked Caroline up and down, her face twisting in exaggerated horror.
“A leather jacket and jeans?” Brenna groaned loudly. “Caroline, this is the most exclusive lounge in the city. You look like a high school principal showing up to bust a party.”
Caroline let out a genuine laugh.
“I came to drink a soda, Brenna, not to find a husband,” Caroline shot back.
Brenna rolled her eyes and dragged Caroline through the entrance.
The moment they crossed the threshold, the physical environment assaulted Caroline’s senses. The lighting was incredibly dim. Purple laser lights sliced through the artificial fog. The heavy, thumping bass from the DJ booth vibrated straight through the soles of her boots and rattled her ribcage.
Brenna pulled her through the packed dance floor. They walked up a short flight of illuminated glass stairs to the VIP mezzanine.
It was a semi-private area with plush velvet booths overlooking the crowd below.
Caroline saw the Medico Group immediately. About eight senior doctors and charge nurses from Washington United Medical Center were crammed into the largest booth.
Julian sat right in the center.
He wasn’t wearing his white lab coat. He wore a sharp, dark blue tailored blazer. His hair was perfectly styled.
The second Julian saw Caroline, his eyes lit up.
He stood up so fast he almost knocked over his glass. He quickly smoothed the front of his blazer, looking incredibly nervous.
He stepped aside, gesturing to the empty space on the velvet sofa right next to him.
“Caroline. I’m so glad you made it,” Julian said, his voice warm. He handed her a tall glass filled with ice and clear liquid. “Virgin mojito. Just how you like it.”
Caroline took the glass. “Thank you, Julian.”
She sat down on the velvet cushions.
The moment she sat, the loud, drunken chatter in the booth died. A thick, suffocating silence fell over the doctors.
