Chapter 319:
She realized that without her family, her connection to her past was severed, and without Jarrod in the room, her present was terrifying.
Her mind fixated on a single, obsessive thought: she only wanted to see Jarrod. Nothing else mattered to her broken mind.
She squeezed her eyes shut, wishing she could permanently disappear into the mattress and cease to exist.
The afternoon shadows lengthened across the stark room. The silence became heavy, thick, and deeply oppressive.
Suddenly, the heavy, rhythmic thud of familiar combat boots echoed in the hallway outside the door.
Caroline’s breath hitched. Her grip on the t-shirt tightened painfully. Her entire body tensed in desperate anticipation.
The electronic lock chimed loudly, and the heavy steel door was pushed open with decisive, uncompromising force.
Jarrod stepped into the room, bringing with him a rush of cold air and an overwhelming presence that instantly shattered the dead silence.
Jarrod kicked the door shut behind him. His sharp eyes immediately scanned the room and landed directly on the untouched food tray.

His jaw clenched tightly. He tossed his tactical datapad onto the metal desk and crossed the room in three long strides.
He stopped at the edge of the bed and looked down at the small lump trembling beneath the heavy duvet.
He gently gripped the edge of the blanket and pulled it back, revealing Caroline’s tear-stained, pale face to the light.
Caroline looked up at him. The sight of his familiar, intense dark eyes acted as an immediate trigger.
The emotional dam she had built to survive the hospital morgue and the storm completely shattered into a million pieces.
A raw, guttural sob ripped from her throat, a sound so full of pure agony that it made Jarrod’s blood run cold.
She scrambled upward and threw her arms frantically around his neck, burying her face deep into the hard curve of his shoulder.
Jarrod immediately sat on the edge of the bed and hauled her onto his lap, wrapping his powerful left arm tightly around her fragile frame, while his injured right arm remained locked and immobile against his side within its rigid field splint, acting as a solid, unyielding post for her to cling to.
Caroline cried with violent, body-shaking force, her hot tears rapidly soaking through the thick fabric of his uniform shirt.
She gasped out broken, fragmented sentences, talking about the blood, the cold morgue table, and how her mother was gone forever.
Jarrod didn’t offer empty platitudes like “It’s going to be okay.” He knew the reality of death too well for comfortable lies.
Instead, he held her tighter, pressing his lips firmly to the crown of her head, absorbing her tremors with his own immense strength.
He rubbed his large left hand up and down her spine in a firm, rhythmic motion, grounding her in the present.
Caroline clutched the fabric of his shirt so tightly her knuckles turned stark white, terrified that he might disappear too.
She cried until she was literally choking on her own breath, her lungs burning fiercely from the sheer exertion of the grief.
