Chapter 1449
[ 537 words ]
“I know.”
Harold deeply respected his mother. Growing up, his father was strict, and she was the warm, nurturing presence that kept his childhood from being completely dreary.
“That’s good,” Noemi smiled, adding, “I went to see Lori’s grandma yesterday. She was thrilled to hear that you two are reunited.”
Reunited? Lorelei’s fingertips curled into her palms, her eyes stinging.
She was here to discuss their divorce.
Her grandmother was holding on through her illness just to support her, hoping to see her happy.
But she was going to let her down.
Maybe she was just destined to be a tragic figure. Her mother passed away early, her father didn’t care about her. Her grandmother was frail and bedridden, and who knew how much time she had left. And the man she loved didn’t love her back.
It felt like she was entirely alone in the world, unloved and unwanted.
“Lori, sweetie, don’t worry. Your grandma is in great spirits.” Noemi said gently, “She just misses you a lot. She kept saying how much she wants to see you two have a baby.”
Silence fell between Harold and Lorelei. A baby wasn’t something you could just conjure out of thin air.
“Haha.” Sensing the awkwardness, Noemi quickly changed the subject. “Lori, I hear the pastries in Eclara City are incredible. Make sure to bring some back for me, okay?”
“I will.” Lorelei replied softly. “Take care of yourself.”
“I’m fine. As long as you two are doing well, I’m happy.”
Noemi genuinely adored her daughter-in-law, regardless of the nasty rumors circulating outside.
She saw everything Lorelei did with her own eyes. She was a good girl.
“Yeah.” Lorelei murmured softly, “Mom, I’ll let you talk to Harold.”
“What’s there to talk about with this brat?” Noemi’s tone shifted, taking on a warning edge. “If you dare mistreat Lori, I’ll make you pay.”
“When have I ever mistreated her?”
Harold asked helplessly, tightening his grip on the steering wheel, a slight frown forming.
He’d practically been her servant these past few days, catering to her every need. “Good. Keep it that way.”
Noemi said with a satisfied chuckle, repeatedly reminding him, “Take Lori out and show her a good time. She’s missed you so much lately she even cried over your content
“Mom, I did not!”
Lorelei’s eyes widened in panic, and she scrambled for an excuse. “I was crying because Baby was sick!”
When had she ever cried because she missed him!
Besides.
Whenever she did cry over him, she always hid under the covers.
Her mother-in-law couldn’t possibly have seen that.
Baby?
Harold immediately latched onto the word. His gaze darkened as he shot Lorelei a piercing look.
His eyes were sharp enough to kill, but luckily he just asked, “Care to explain?”
།
“Gotta go, Harold told his mother, hanging up right as he hit a red light. He slammed on the brakes, his knuckles turning white on the steering wheel.
“Um… Baby is the name of a cat I adopted.”
Lorelei cleared her throat, explaining in a small voice.
“A cat?”
Harold frowned. When did she get a cat?
“Yeah.”
Lorelei sat up straighter, nodding earnestly. “I found her on the street She was covered in injuries,
pitiful.” treeft

“I know you don’t like animals, so she’s always slept in my room. She’s never been
in yours.”
Slept in her room?
Harold tugged at his tie, his eyes growing darker.
That cat was pretty damn lucky.
