Chapter 1452

[ 553 words ]

An old flame?

Though she couldn’t see the girl’s face, her silhouette was stunning, and she looked perfectly matched standing next to Harold.

She had tried to mentally prepare herself to let go.

But seeing it with her own eyes still felt like a needle piercing her heart, making her want to curl in on herself.

Before Harold could look her way, Lorelei quickly rolled the wheelchair into a quiet corner, hiding her grief and vulnerability.

“All done?”

Harold returned to her side. Seeing her head bowed and her eyes rimmed with red, his brow furrowed. “What’s wrong?”

“I don’t feel well.”

Lorelei wanted to pretend everything was fine, but she had overestimated her acting skills. Her voice trembled.

“Where?”

Harold crouched in front of her, his tone and expression softening significantly. “Your foot? Did you bump it during the scan?”

Lorelei shook her head, but the tears began to fall like broken pearls, entirely out of her control.

“Does it hurt that much?”

Harold hated seeing her cry; once she started, she rarely stopped. He grabbed a tissue and gently wiped her tears, coaxing her softly. “I’ll go grab some painkillers first, then come back for the report.”

“I’m fine.”

Lorelei wiped her face and grabbed his hand, her voice raspy. “I just miss my grandma. I want to see her.”

“Once I wrap up some things at work, I’ll go back with you to visit her.”

Looking at her tear-washed eyes, he sighed softly. “Wait here. I’ll go get the results.” “Okay.”

Lorelei watched him, her wet eyelashes fluttering as she gave a muffled response.

Was it her imagination?

He was being so gentle!

But then again, he had been just as gentle with that girl earlier!

After getting the report.

Harold checked it briefly to ensure there were no fractures, picked up her

prescription, and drove her away from the hospital.

But instead of going home, they pulled up to a nearby dessert shop.

“Why are we here?” Lorelei asked.

“What flavor do you like these days?” Harold stepped out of the car, his eyes on her. “Since you don’t like strawberry anymore, I’m buying you a new cake.”

“Huh?”

Lorelei blinked in confusion. “Wasn’t yesterday’s cake a buy-one-get-one-free deal?”

“I ate the free one. The one I bought…” he paused, his voice dropping slightly, “you threw in the trash.”

“Wasn’t that…”

Lorelei swallowed hard, almost blurting out: *Wasn’t that your old flame’s leftovers?*

Instead, she pivoted. “Don’t you hate sweets?”

Harold: “And you supposedly hate strawberry cake.”

His implication was clear: people change.

Lorelei: *I was faking it.*

Harold: *What a coincidence, me too.*

“That one.”

Afraid of exposing her lie, Lorelei pointed randomly.

Lychee.

Lychee?

Harold frowned, vaguely recalling someone else who liked that flavor. “Alright.”

After setting the cake down, Harold went to get her some hot water.

When he returned, a man was sitting at their table.

He took one look.

And his gaze turned instantly glacial.

“Dr. Houston. Long time no see.” Joel Garner stood up, offering a polite smile and

an outstretched hand.

The warmth vanished from Harold’s

face replaced by absolute frost. He cofaly at Joel, his defenses antly raised.

A few seconds later, he set the cup down and shook Joel’s hand.

One second.

Two seconds.

Three seconds.

The clock ticked on, and their grip remained locked.

Lorelei watched in total

bewilderment, terrified they were et

about to throw punches. They had chother since high
